{"id":66476,"date":"2024-02-16T13:11:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T13:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/02\/16\/turkey-and-greece-to-join-european-missile-shield\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:04:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:04:47","slug":"turkey-and-greece-to-join-european-missile-shield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2024\/02\/16\/turkey-and-greece-to-join-european-missile-shield\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey and Greece to join European missile shield"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BERLIN \u2014 Turkey and Greece will join the European Sky Shield Initiative, bringing the total number of countries participating in the German-led initiative to 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The German, Greek and Turkish defense ministers announced the move on Feb. 15 at a Brussels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2024\/02\/14\/nato-chief-stoltenberg-hails-allies-record-defense-spending\/\">summit of NATO defense ministers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Sky Shield Initiative, ESSI, was launched in August 2022 by German chancellor Olaf Scholz. It seeks to streamline joint procurement of air defense capabilities across Europe and enhance the interoperability of systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative is in response to a perceived European vulnerability against attacks of the kind Russia has launched on Ukrainian infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German chancellor Scholz said in December 2022 that he hoped the plan would be fully developed within five years from that date. Half a year later, the German parliament authorized the nearly \u20ac4 billion ($4.3 billion) purchase of the Israeli Arrow-3 anti-ballistic missile system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week\u2019s Hellenic-Turkish letter of intent comes just days after former U.S. president and presumptive Republican nominee for the November general election, Donald Trump, criticized NATO partners for not meeting the alliance\u2019s spending goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis initiative helps translate allied commitments on defense spending into tangible capabilities available for our collective defense,\u201d said NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoan\u0103. \u201cIt demonstrates the clear commitment of European allies to fair burden sharing as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ESSI architecture is separate from NATO and also includes neutral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2023\/11\/16\/austria-to-buy-long-range-air-defenses-under-sky-shield-push\/\">Austria<\/a> and Switzerland, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2023\/07\/05\/neutral-switzerland-and-austria-will-join-european-air-defense-project\/\">together joined in mid-2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler called the accession an \u201cimportant step towards fulfilling NATO\u2019s necessities,\u201d adding that Turkey was \u201cready to contribute to this initiative with our wide range of national resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey, a NATO member, has previously purchased the Russian-made S-400 air-defense weapon, raising questions about interoperability with other members of the Sky Shield Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey has the second-largest army in NATO after the United States. The country has a longstanding rivalry and unresolved disputes with fellow alliance member Greece, particularly over demarcation lines in the Aegean
