{"id":67081,"date":"2024-06-07T19:22:26","date_gmt":"2024-06-07T19:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/06\/07\/us-army-debates-path-to-buy-long-range-precision-munitions\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:06:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:06:41","slug":"us-army-debates-path-to-buy-long-range-precision-munitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/techwatch\/2024\/06\/07\/us-army-debates-path-to-buy-long-range-precision-munitions\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army debates path to buy long-range precision munitions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army has spent roughly five years assessing what a helicopter-fired, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/11\/08\/lockheed-talks-results-of-us-armys-long-range-munition-shoot-off\/\" target=\"_blank\">long-range precision munition <\/a>would look like. But during that time other options have emerged that could achieve greater commonality with weapons that can be launched from a greater number of platforms, according to the service\u2019s lead for force development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrankly, I have a lot of questions in this space, as the G-8, that I\u2019ve asked for,\u201d Lt. Gen. Karl Gingrich told Defense News in a recent interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has procured an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/09\/army-to-field-israeli-made-long-range-missile-on-helicopters\/\" target=\"_blank\"> interim system<\/a> for its Long-Range Precision Munition program, or LRPM \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2019\/08\/27\/can-an-israeli-missile-give-us-army-aviation-an-advantage-in-future-warfare\/\" target=\"_blank\">Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems\u2019 Spike non-line-of-site missile.<\/a> The service is fielding it on a portion of its AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service was expected to choose an industry team to provide a new LRPM in fiscal 2023 following a shoot-off that included the Spike weapon in the fall of 2022, but that decision was delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spike \u201chas inherent qualities to it: range, great; sensor, maybe not what we need in the long term,\u201d Gingrich said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs that the solution to proliferate across all Apaches? I\u2019m not sold yet. I need to do some more work,\u201d he added. \u201cLRPM actually is looking an awful lot like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2024\/03\/26\/us-army-leaning-into-launched-effects-for-modernized-battlefield\/\" target=\"_blank\">Launched Effects-Medium Range.\u201d<\/a> Launched effects are expected to deliver capabilities such as targeting, reconnaissance, surveillance, network extension and lethality in a complex environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gingrich said he is considering commonality as a factor. There is a possibility, he noted, that LPRM \u201cjust gets pushed into Launched Effects-Medium Range and then now, potentially, we could have a common capability at that range in that form factor that could be air-delivered or ground-delivered from a platform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One attribute under consideration, according to Gingrich, is the missile\u2019s speed. A loitering munition is slower. \u201cDo you still need that direct attack that comes in at a higher rate of speed?\u201d he asked. \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, the Army still needs something that can achieve extended ranges when considering current battlefields, Gingrich said. \u201cWe still have Hellfire [missiles]. We still have [the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile] JAGM, but we\u2019ve never been able to really get the range that we need out of JAGM, which is a great system,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is prioritizing the development and acquisition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/05\/15\/army-evaluating-first-launched-effects-prototype\/\" target=\"_blank\">launched effects<\/a> that are capable of flying at different ranges and deploying from a variety of air and ground vehicles, particularly with the cancellation of the service\u2019 crewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2024\/02\/08\/us-army-spent-billions-on-a-new-helicopter-that-now-will-never-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft,<\/a> which made available funding to pursue those programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gingrich is preparing for a session with the Army Requirements Oversight Council to solidify requirements for launched effects. That meeting is scheduled for June 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A year ago, the strategy for launched effects was murky. The Army was considering several size classes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2018\/05\/01\/army-to-launch-drone-from-helicopter-for-first-time-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">launched effects <\/a>and was prototyping the first version of a small capability. This version was meant to help the service decide how to procure and employ these systems on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a great deal of interest from industry. The service held an event in February for launched effects with a large turnout from businesses. The service also plans to experiment with a heavy focus on launched effects at its aviation experimentation event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/project-convergence\/2021\/05\/17\/us-army-aviation-exercise-unveils-unprecedented-progress-as-service-preps-for-future-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">known as Edge,<\/a> this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medium-range launched effects prototype is the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/08\/24\/army-awards-air-launched-effects-contracts-for-future-helicopters\/\" target=\"_blank\">contributions from five companies<\/a> that teamed up. The Army plans to wrap up evaluation of the prototypes in September and will then weigh a number of options, from rapid fielding to low-rate initial production to more prototyping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service also released a request for proposals in March for a short-range launched effect. A prototyping process for that effort will begin in early FY25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A long-range version is considered more of a corps-level asset, and prototyping will begin to develop the capability at the tail end of FY25.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Could air-launched effects also be a long-range precision munition?
