{"id":67083,"date":"2024-03-08T18:53:47","date_gmt":"2024-03-08T18:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/03\/08\/nato-navigates-fine-line-between-transparency-information-security\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:06:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:06:02","slug":"nato-navigates-fine-line-between-transparency-information-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2024\/03\/08\/nato-navigates-fine-line-between-transparency-information-security\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO navigates fine line between transparency, information security"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Korzeniewo, POLAND \u2013 \u201cWe are ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three-word statement was highlighted in bold letters at the opening of NATO\u2019s March 4 briefing, on the occasion of the Polish-leg of the alliance\u2019s largest military exercise since 1988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even amid the resolute and calm tone of officials in the room, there was a palpable sense of apprehension among reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A core theme of the speeches presented by NATO representatives revolved around transparency, specifically in showcasing what the Steadfast Defender exercise \u2014 and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2024\/03\/05\/amid-russia-jitters-nato-drills-flowing-troops-across-polish-rivers\/\" target=\"_blank\">subsidiary drill Dragon<\/a>, led by Poland \u2014 would involve. Yet many were wary of answering questions related to Russia or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2024\/03\/06\/are-drones-the-future-not-for-everything-says-polish-general\/\" target=\"_blank\">lessons learned<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">war in Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On several occasions, officials were pressed about whether they had concerns over revealing their plans to Russia through events such as these, or even the possibility the Kremlin could intercept operational details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course we are concerned, everyone is concerned,\u201d Brig. Gen. Gunnar Bruegner, assistant chief of staff at NATO\u2019s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, told Defense News. \u201c[We need] to make sure we are safeguarding the critical information, but it does not relieve us from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2024\/03\/07\/poland-provides-security-guarantees-to-lithuania-amid-russia-tensions\/\" target=\"_blank\">requirement of making these exercises happen<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is quite a balance you need to keep; you cannot showcase everything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a March 4 news conference, Maj. Gen. Randolph Staudenraus, director of strategy and policy at NATO\u2019s Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum, told reporters that while the alliance does protect its communications, \u201cwe are also really trying to be transparent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fine line between accountability and information security is one that some NATO members have recently grappled with. A notable example is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2024\/03\/04\/germany-russia-spar-over-a-leaked-audio-on-missiles-for-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">leak of a German discussion<\/a> about potentially providing Ukraine iwth Taurus missiles. Russia intercepted audio from the web conference between German Air Force officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through this, Moscow was able to get its hands on information regarding the potential supply of cruise missiles to Ukraine as well as operational scenarios of how the war could play out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian officials said last month that the country views Steadfast Defender as a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to that training event, Bruegner said, details provided to the media during briefings are meant to illustrate the bigger picture, but only in broad terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe plans themselves and the details in there will not be made available to everyone. What you\u2019re seeing here are slides NATO has unclassified,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also noted that an objective of the exercises is to showcase the integration of capabilities, and not necessarily what NATO would do in a contested setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe for sure would not fly banners on the amphibious devices in a contested exercise, which would have involved having an opponent on the other side of the eastern benches of the river and would\u2019ve looked different [than what we saw in the Dragon drill],\u201d Bruegner said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A core theme of the speeches presented by NATO representatives revolved around transparency.
