The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2024\/01\/25\/biden-urges-congress-to-approve-turkey-f-16-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\">State Department finally approved the sale when Turkey ratified Sweden\u2019s NATO membership<\/a> after stalling for more than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen Rand Paul, R-Ky., on Thursday forced the vote on the resolution to block the sale, citing \u201csignificant human rights issues, arbitrary killings, suspicious deaths of person in custody, torture, arbitrary arrests and continued detention of tens of thousands of persons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI also remain deeply concerned about the negative strategic implications of this proposed sale, given Turkey\u2019s reckless military actions in recent years,\u201d Paul said on the Senate floor ahead of the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/us-f-16-fighter-jet-shoots-armed-turkish-drone-syria\/story?id=103758981\" target=\"_blank\">a U.S. F-16 shot down a Turkish drone in October<\/a> in northeast Syria, where American troops back Kurdish-majority forces Ankara considers a terrorist organization. He also pointed to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-54345622\" target=\"_blank\"> Turkey\u2019s deployment of F-16s to Azerbaijan in 2020<\/a> during its war with Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Ben Cardin, D-Md., defended the sale on the floor after greenlighting it last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI consulted closely with the highest levels of the Biden administration about this transaction over several months,\u201d said Cardin. \u201cI believe they share my concerns, and I believe we are making progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cardin argued Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine presented a strategic imperative for Sweden\u2019s NATO accession as well as the need to modernize<b> <\/b>Turkey\u2019s capabilities within the alliance. He said the sale would upgrade Turkey\u2019s \u201caging F-16 fleet to a more capable model, a model that is compatible with the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTurkey is key to the defense of the southern flank of NATO,\u201d said Cardin. \u201cIt is host to a major U.S. military presence, and Turkey\u2019s F-16 fleet contributes to NATO, including in the Black Sea, which is critical to our national security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The State Department also approved an $8.6 billion sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets to Greece last month at the same time it greenlit Turkey\u2019s F-16 purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2019\/07\/17\/turkey-officially-kicked-out-of-f-35-program\/\">expelled Turkey from the F-35 co-production program<\/a> in 2019 over Ankara\u2019s purchase of the S-400 missile defense system due to fears Moscow could use its advanced radar system to spy on the stealth fighter jets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate
