It also bars the companies\u2019 management from entering the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Filings show General Dynamics operates a half-dozen Gulfstream and jet aviation services operations in China, which remains heavily reliant on foreign aerospace technology even as it attempts to build its own presence in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also helps make the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/07\/08\/state-okays-possible-2-billion-abrams-tank-sale-to-taiwan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Abrams tank<\/a> being purchased by Taiwan to replace outdated armor intended to deter or resist an invasion from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Atomics produces the Predator and Reaper drones used by the U.S. military. Chinese authorities did not go into details on the company\u2019s alleged involvement with supplying arms to Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beijing has long threatened such sanctions, but has rarely issued them as its economy reels from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, high unemployment and a sharp decline in foreign investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe continued U.S. arms sales to China\u2019s Taiwan region seriously violate the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqu\u00e9s, interfere in China\u2019s internal affairs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2023\/03\/24\/why-is-china-strengthening-its-military-its-not-all-about-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">undermine China\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity<\/a>,\u201d China\u2019s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It insists that the mainland and the island to which Chiang Kai-shek\u2019s nationalist forces fled amid civil war in 1949 remain part of a single Chinese nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanctions were leveled under Beijing\u2019s recently enacted Law of the People\u2019s Republic of China on Countering Foreign Sanctions, aimed at retaliating against U.S. financial and travel restrictions on Chinese officials accused of human rights abuses in mainland China and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Dynamics\u2019 fully owned entities are registered in Hong Kong, the southern Chinese semi-autonomous city over which Beijing has steadily been increasing its political and economic control to the point that it faces no vocal opposition and has seen its critics silenced, imprisoned or forced into exile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has threatened action against foreign companies and governments that aid Taiwan\u2019s defense and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/04\/03\/pacific-problems-why-the-us-disagrees-on-the-cost-of-deterring-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. military presence in the region<\/a>, leading to commercial boycotts and diplomatic standoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China banned American firms Lockheed Martin and Raytheon from the Chinese market in retaliation for the use of one of their planes and a missile to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/02\/08\/china-has-conducted-spy-balloon-program-for-years-pentagon-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">shoot down a suspected spy balloon<\/a> that flew over the continental United States last year. Similar balloons have frequently been discovered floating over Taiwan and into the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite their lack of formal diplomatic ties \u2014 a concession Washington made to Beijing when they established relations in 1979 \u2014 the U.S. remains Taiwan\u2019s most important source of diplomatic support and supplier of military hardware from fighter jets to air defense systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taiwan has also been investing heavily in its own defense industry, producing sophisticated missiles and submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China had 14 warplanes and six naval vessels operating around Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday, with six of the aircraft crossing into Taiwan\u2019s air defense identification zone \u2014 a tactic to test Taiwan\u2019s defenses, wear down its capabilities and intimidate the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, that has had little effect, with the vast majority of the island\u2019s 23 million people opposing political unification with China.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China has
