{"id":67509,"date":"2023-12-19T15:53:36","date_gmt":"2023-12-19T15:53:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/12\/19\/us-armys-new-fire-protection-system-launches-interceptor-in-test\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:00:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:00:46","slug":"us-armys-new-fire-protection-system-launches-interceptor-in-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2023\/12\/19\/us-armys-new-fire-protection-system-launches-interceptor-in-test\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army\u2019s new fire protection system launches interceptor in test"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army\u2019s Indirect Fire Protection Capability System completed a risk-reduction flight demonstration, launching a Raytheon-made AIM-9X Sidewinder interceptor and sending it to a target, developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/08\/24\/heres-who-the-us-army-has-tapped-to-build-an-enduring-capability-to-counter-drones-and-cruise-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dynetics<\/a> announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IFPC is designed to protect fixed and semi-fixed sites from rockets, artillery and mortars as well as cruise missiles and drone threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/06\/04\/dynetics-unveils-enduring-shield-its-solution-for-the-us-armys-future-cruise-missile-defense-capability\/\" target=\"_blank\">Enduring Shield, <\/a>the company\u2019s name for the IFPC launcher, validated \u201cend-to-end launch functionality of the weapon system, including sending the AIM-9X interceptor to a designated target location,\u201d said Leidos-owned Dynetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simulated Integrated Battle Command System interface was also used as part of the test. IBCS, which is meant to connect air and missile defense sensors and shooters on the battlefield, will serve as the command-and-control system for IFPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that the risk reduction demonstration is complete, the first set of 12 launchers will enter the Army\u2019s developmental test program beginning in January. An operational assessment is planned for later in the year, the company said. Data from the demonstration this year and the 2024 testing will be used to \u201cimprove\u201d the next round of launchers the company builds, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a major milestone for our team to cross,\u201d Larry Barisciano, Dynetics\u2019 weapon systems operations manager, said in the statement. \u201cBeing able to say these prototypes are ready for government testing by succeeding at this demonstration is a huge win for us as well as our warfighters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program has previously experienced several delays. The Army decided<b> <\/b>to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/04\/25\/army-reworking-enduring-plans-for-indirect-fires-protection-system\/\" target=\"_blank\"> reformulate its enduring IFPC system in 2019<\/a> to ensure it could fend off rising cruise missiles and drone threats. As it shifted its plans, Congress mandated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/02\/15\/iron-dome-plans-being-finalized-as-us-army-begins-training-on-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\">purchase of two Rafael and Raytheon-developed Iron Dome batteries to serve as an interim solution<\/a> for cruise missile defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army had also originally planned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/15\/army-developed-multimission-launcher-off-the-table\/\" target=\"_blank\">develop and field its own multi-mission launcher<\/a> as part of the enduring IFPC solution, but canceled that program in late<b> <\/b>2019 in favor of a more technologically mature launcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service held<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/05\/19\/us-army-tackles-enduring-system-to-counter-both-drone-and-cruise-missile-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\"> a shoot-off for two teams at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, <\/a>in 2021 between Dynetics and a Raytheon-Rafael team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dynetics then won a $247 million contract in September 2021 to build a total of 16 prototype launchers for the Army\u2019s enduring IFPC system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August 2023, the Army\u2019s program executive officer for missiles and space, Brig. Gen. Frank Lozano, told Defense News that while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2023\/08\/09\/indirect-fires-launchers-on-track-amid-supply-chain-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dynetics was experiencing some supply chain challenges<\/a>, the service was still expecting to receive the first set of launchers by the start of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the launcher\u2019s first chosen interceptor is AIM-9X, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/10\/09\/army-pursuit-of-new-air-and-missile-defense-interceptors-heating-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army will soon begin the process to competitively acquire a second interceptor<\/a>, making it a true multi-mission system. The Army is seeking to include funding in its five-year budget plan to begin development of the second interceptor, Lozano said in October.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With
