Gen. Marcus Annibale, the director of expeditionary warfare on the chief of naval operations\u2019 staff, said Wednesday at the Surface Navy Association\u2019s annual conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy released the request for proposals on Jan. 5. The contract would cover up to six vessels, according to the SAM.gov contracting website. Offers are due May 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps and Navy previously issued five concept design study contracts to collaborate with industry during the requirements development phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, Annibale said the Landing Ship Medium, or LSM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2023\/04\/05\/landing-ship-medium-requirements-in-final-approvals-with-navy-marines\/\">capability development document <\/a>was moving through the approval process, following a significant disagreement between the Marine Corps and the Pentagon over what capabilities the vessel should have and therefore how much it should cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LSM is to primarily support Marine littoral regiments serving as a stand-in force. Nicholas Martinez\/U.S. Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LSM, previously called Light Amphibious Warship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2021\/06\/10\/us-navys-light-amphibious-warship-on-track-for-fy22-contract-award-through-rd-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\">ran into early delays<\/a>. The program had been set for a fiscal 2022 contract award, which was pushed into fiscal 2023 and then fiscal 2025 due to budget constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make the most of the intervening time, the Marine Corps is buying three stern landing vessels to turn into LSM prototypes so the Corps \u2014 more specifically the 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2023\/09\/07\/marines-to-test-out-first-stern-landing-vessel-at-project-convergence\/\" target=\"_blank\">can begin experimenting with the new platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program has remained on track since its procurement start was delayed to FY25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m
