The Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined the bank as full members in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe NIB hasn\u2019t in the past financed defense companies in the military-industry complex. However, the world has changed,\u201d said Andr\u00e9 K\u00fc\u00fcsvek, the bank\u2019s chief executive. \u201cSuch a development can have immense symbolic value. It\u2019s a change in our business under consideration by our owner governments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The central discussion at the government level revolves around what type of capital investments within the defense sphere the bank might be sanctioned to finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2024\/03\/01\/finland-approves-construction-of-patrias-f-35-assembly-facility\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8070211.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Finland approves construction of Patria\u2019s F-35 assembly facility<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The project is linked to the $9.6 billion jet procurement contract reached between Finland and the American company Lockheed Martin in February 2022.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any future pan-Nordic agreement to authorize the NIB to provide development loans to the defense industry would represent a significant annex to the bank\u2019s operations. At present, the bank is primarily focused on funding projects within the portfolios of infrastructure and green transformation, such as wind and hydropower; hydrogen-fueled transportation; environmentally friendly buildings; airports; and road networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Nordic states, led by Sweden and Norway, want to strike a balance between those activities and the additional field of national and regional security, which involves drone systems and surveillance technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bank, which traditionally prioritizes high-impact projects, completed $1.1 billion in new lending during the first three months of 2024. In 2023, it paid out $3.7 billion in loans to Nordic companies. Nordic governments have made no secret of their desire to exercise what they consider a so-called NATO dividend to deepen cooperation in key areas, including joint weapons development and production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One joint Nordic cooperation project that got underway in the first quarter of 2024 saw the Finnish Defence Forces transfer military equipment to stores in neighboring Norway. Finland\u2019s military plans to commence a similar operation to move equipment to stores in Sweden in the fall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nordic Investment Bank could
