{"id":67942,"date":"2024-09-25T08:43:31","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T08:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/09\/25\/army-awards-two-contracts-to-build-cargo-robot-prototypes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:12:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:12:23","slug":"army-awards-two-contracts-to-build-cargo-robot-prototypes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2024\/09\/25\/army-awards-two-contracts-to-build-cargo-robot-prototypes\/","title":{"rendered":"Army awards two contracts to build cargo robot prototypes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DETROIT, Michigan \u2014 The Army has picked American Rheinmetall Vehicles and HDT Expeditionary Systems to build prototypes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/12\/14\/four-companies-advance-to-build-armys-equipment-transport-ground-robot\/\" target=\"_blank\">equipment-carrying robots<\/a>, the service announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several companies were competing to build the second increment of the service\u2019s Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport (S-MET), robot, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2020\/10\/13\/general-dynamics-rolls-out-new-trx-ground-robot-at-ausa\/\" target=\"_blank\">General Dynamics Land Systems<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/2024\/02\/29\/anduril-hanwha-team-up-to-bid-for-armys-light-payload-robot\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anduril and Hanwha<\/a> team, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2023\/10\/09\/teledyne-flir-debuts-vehicle-for-army-equipment-carrier-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Teledyne FLIR<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/10\/31\/heres-the-robotic-vehicle-that-will-carry-equipment-for-us-troops\/\" target=\"_blank\">GDLS won the first contracts <\/a>in 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/02\/18\/after-protest-army-launches-new-competition-for-robotic-mule\/\" target=\"_blank\">and 2020 <\/a>to build the first increment of the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the newest contract, American Rheinmetall and HDT will each build eight prototypes for a combined total of $22 million, the service said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cS-MET Increment II addresses capability gaps associated with excessive physical burdens, recharging batteries during continuous operations, and reducing sustainment burden for semi-independent operations,\u201d Kyle Bruner, the Army\u2019s project manager for force projection within the Program Executive Office Combat Support &amp; Combat Service Support, said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the robot also \u201creduces Soldier load and enhances small unit combat effectiveness by reducing fatigue and injury caused by excessive physical loads, shifting the burden to the robotic platform,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first increment of S-MET is a radio-controlled, eight-wheeled platform that can carry various payloads and generate power for electronic systems. While the first increment is capable of carrying 1,000 lbs, the Army\u2019s goal for the second increment is to double the weight the robot can carry, the service said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the second increment should have higher exportable power to handle unmanned aircraft systems, run more quietly and have a dismounted wireless mesh communication network integrated into the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system is also required to be modular and open in order to upgrade it easily and cost-effectively, the Army stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service plans to award a production contract for S-MET Increment II following the prototyping phase and developmental testing in late fiscal year 2027. The service\u2019s current plan is to buy up to 2,195 systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is pursuing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2023\/10\/09\/robot-army-of-one-service-focuses-on-single-robotic-combat-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">a different robotic combat vehicle<\/a> for heavy maneuver forces, but the S-MET vehicle could be the more common robot of choice for lighter formations, the Army\u2019s Program Executive Officer for Ground Combat Systems, Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean, said in an interview in late 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">S-MET \u201cis a very capable, small platform, and we\u2019re seeing a lot of value with
