Gen. Sean Gainey, the service\u2019s Space and Missile Defense Command commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The command is targeting October 2025 to release the new strategy, a joint effort by the Space and Missile Defense Center of Excellence and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/interviews\/2024\/03\/07\/us-armys-air-defense-modernization-boss-on-missiles-machine-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army Futures Command<\/a>, as well as other service players such as the Army Air and Missile Defense Commands and the Fires Center of Excellence, he said during a press briefing at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2024\/08\/06\/rtx-gets-478m-to-replenish-germanys-patriot-missiles-sent-to-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Space and Missile Defense Symposium<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is taking \u201can integrated approach to the strategy,\u201d Gainey noted, and it will be nested in the Army\u2019s multidomain operations doctrine and warfighting concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service previously released a strategic air and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2024\/08\/06\/boeing-on-track-to-break-pac-3-missile-seeker-annual-production-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">missile defense<\/a> vision in 2018, which was focused on the 2028 time period. That strategy centered on structure and force organization, \u201cbut also what we fight with and how we fight well,\u201d Gainey said. \u201cBut it\u2019s time to look even further into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new strategy will take into account \u201cwhat we\u2019ve learned from previous years and current conflicts to design the type of force we\u2019ll need\u201d to ensure an AMD force is successful in 2040, Gainey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/10\/09\/change-of-plans-us-army-embraces-lessons-learned-from-war-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">ongoing conflicts in Ukraine<\/a> and in the Middle East, Gainey noted, \u201cIt\u2019s real easy to see the challenges that are out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have an idea, we know currently how the threat is evolving and where we believe the threat is [in] the future,\u201d Gainey said. \u201cSo, this strategy is going to allow us the opportunity to lay a foundation &#8230; with capability and development to be able to address that future threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already the command has determined there are some imperatives that will be included in the future strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know we will operate under constant observation and in continuous contact \u2014 360-degree coverage is a non-negotiable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategy also will recognize that technology used for missile defense must have an open architecture and use \u201call benefits\u201d of artificial intelligence, Gainey noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capability should also be \u201cfast and cost curve-informed and adaptable,\u201d he
