{"id":68804,"date":"2025-02-04T15:12:54","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T15:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/02\/04\/marine-corps-passes-second-straight-audit-as-other-services-lag-behind\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:15:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:15:49","slug":"marine-corps-passes-second-straight-audit-as-other-services-lag-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2025\/02\/04\/marine-corps-passes-second-straight-audit-as-other-services-lag-behind\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps passes second straight audit as other services lag behind"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Marine Corps has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/the-americas\/2024\/02\/23\/marines-pass-full-financial-audit-a-first-for-any-us-military-branch\/\" target=\"_blank\">passed its audit for a second straight year <\/a>while the rest of the Defense Department is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/11\/18\/no-clean-audit-yet-but-results-show-momentum-dod-comptroller-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">still working toward the goal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIndependent auditors verified that the Marine Corps\u2019 financial records are materially accurate, complete, and compliant with federal regulations and issued an unmodified opinion for Fiscal Year 2024,\u201d the service announced in a Feb. 4 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The efforts to pass an audit \u201ctell the American people that a dollar invested in the Marine Corps is a dollar well spent,\u201d Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith said in the statement. \u201cMake no mistake, passing an audit makes us more ready to fight when our nation calls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reporting for $49 billion in financial assets \u201crequires a holistic view from the ground level up to the highest service levels,\u201d said Lt. Gen. James Adams III, deputy commandant for programs and resources. \u201cThe audit process demonstrates Marines\u2019 inherent integrity \u2014 opening up and illuminating potential audit mistakes and inventory miscounts across the entire chain of command. That can be an uncomfortable experience for Marine leaders of all ranks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clean audit means the Marine Corps is able to accurately track and report financial transactions globally; keep correct stock of inventory of facilities, equipment and assets and can account for \u201ctaxpayer dollars spent during the last fiscal year,\u201d the statement notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passing an audit also means the service can better plan, program, budget and spend congressionally appropriated funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is now taking additional steps beyond passing an annual audit to \u201cstabilize\u201d its new accounting system and procedures, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon, in its seventh year conducting a full audit, has made progress toward a clean audit but has yet to pass across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe the department has turned a corner in its understanding of the challenges and, more importantly, in addressing those challenges. Momentum is on our side,\u201d the Pentagon\u2019s Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer Michael McCord said in November 2024 when the department announced the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon has until FY28 to obtain a clean opinion from the Inspector General as mandated by Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department saw major progress in resolving material weaknesses, a key metric used to track auditability. The department, for example, resolved all contingent legal liabilities considered material weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe department continues to need the sustained investment, senior leadership commitment and the support of our partners in Congress, federal regulators, the audit community and our military and civilian personnel to accomplish its audit goals,\u201d McCord said. \u201cAn unmodified audit opinion has always been the Department\u2019s primary financial management goal, and with their help, I know it is achievable.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Marine Corps has passed its second annual audit, the only service yet to accomplish the goal.
