Gen. Air Force leaders now see a similar need for a low-cost, slower-moving aircraft for missions in low-threat environments.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conley emphasized the platform would be adaptable.<b> <\/b>The Skyraider II is able to change hard pods for various mission sets, from close air support to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we do this right, it\u2019ll be modular,\u201d Conley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operators are already developing ways to break down the aircraft, stow it in a C-17 cargo plane and transport it where needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we have lots of opportunities to help shape that platform into something different than what we had in the past,\u201d Conley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plane is scheduled for delivery to Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, this month, according to Conley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"423\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-1H_602SOS_Jun1970.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-1H_602SOS_Jun1970.jpg.jpg 648w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/A-1H_602SOS_Jun1970.jpg.jpg?resize=300,196 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Air Force&#8217;s new Skyraider II pays homage to the Skyraider used during the Vietnam War. (U.S. Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conley concluded his remarks at a session that covered various aspects of AFSOC with a short video announcing the name of the new aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video announcer described the Skyraider II as a \u201cmodern powerhouse inspired\u201d by the A-1E Skyraider, which troops called \u201cSpads\u201d during its Cold War-era service \u2014 a nod to the wood-and-wire World War I fighter plane, Air Force Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/10\/17\/skyraider-2-the-air-force-may-bring-back-vietnam-style-combat-plane\/\" target=\"_blank\">previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom the jungles of Vietnam to the battlefields of tomorrow, the warrior spirit of the A-1 lives on in the OA-1K Skyraider II,\u201d the announcer said. \u201cReady to answer the call any place, any time, anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft has received criticism for using a propeller instead of a jet engine. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/fixed-wing\/us-air-force-dubs-new-oa-1k-armed-crop-duster-skyraider-ii-ahead-of-first-delivery\/162009.article\" target=\"_blank\">media outlets<\/a> have referred to it as a \u201ccrop duster,\u201d a reference to agricultural aircraft that sprays pesticides on crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we don\u2019t expect the Skyraider II to go mix it up with fifth- and sixth-generation fighters, it will provide value to our supported forces globally,\u201d said Brig. Gen. Craig Prather, AFSOC\u2019s director of Strategic Plans, Programs and Requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The propeller operation allows the aircraft maximum maneuverability, extended loitering and other features that allow for real-time intelligence and immediate fire support to troops on the ground, Conley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft can fly 245 miles per hour<b> <\/b>at 10,000 feet with a range of 1,500 miles at 8,000 feet, according to its manufacturer L3Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform can carry precision-guided munitions and a variety of weapons and sensing packages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat doesn\u2019t look like a crop duster, does it?\u201d Conley asked the
