Here\u2019s how they\u2019re being used."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2023\/10\/13\/us-a-10-attack-planes-arrive-in-middle-east-in-bid-to-deter-wider-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">A-10 Warthog attack planes<\/a> have been spotted flying over eastern Syria in recent days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as Syrian rebel forces advance, posing the greatest threat to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime in years, rumors have swirled online about the aircraft\u2019s possible role in strikes against his allied forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A video of an A-10 flying low over a village, reportedly in eastern Syria near the Iraq border and one highlighted by <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2024\/12\/03\/videos-surface-of-u-s-a-10s-flying-over-deir-al-zor-amid-syrian-army-clashes-with-sdf-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Aviationist<\/a>, fueled rumors that U.S. forces were supporting Syrian rebel advances with the A-10\u2032s renowned firepower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WATCH \ud83d\udea8<br><br>America enters the Syria chat! <br><br>A U.S. A-10C \u201cWarthog\u201d spotted near Deir Ezzor, supporting SDF advances against Assad and Iranian-backed forces along the Euphrates. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KVIBg7wWb7\">pic.twitter.com\/KVIBg7wWb7<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Open Source Intel (@Osint613) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Osint613\/status\/1863933516083265808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 3, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But an official source with knowledge of the event told Defense News Wednesday that the A-10\u2032s involvement in Syrian airspace has been far more limited, with flights largely conducted as shows of force in the east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some videos circulating are also older clips, the source added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One video making the rounds, meanwhile, was taken the morning of Dec. 3, around the time U.S. Central Command forces carried out a strike near Military Support Site Euphrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source told Defense News on Wednesday that A-10s flew in the area as a \u201cshow of force,\u201d but were not directly involved in the strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That particular operation destroyed several weapon systems, including three truck-mounted multiple rocket launchers, a T-64 tank, an armored personnel carrier and mortars, CENTCOM said in a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon\u2019s press secretary, told reporters Tuesday that the targets, which were not directly hit by A-10s, \u201cpresented a clear and imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. is still assessing what forces operated those weapons, Ryder said, but noted Iran-backed militia groups in that area have previously attacked MSS Euphrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CENTCOM forces struck those targets after the rocket launchers, APC and mortars were fired toward U.S. personnel, officials said. Ryder told reporters at the Pentagon Monday that no U.S. personnel were injured and no infrastructure was damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a separate incident on Nov. 29, however, A-10 aircraft struck a \u201chostile target\u201d \u2014 specifically, individuals seen preparing a rocket rail \u2014 that posed a threat to forces at MSS Euphrates, Ryder said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ryder emphasized that the strikes were solely meant to defend U.S. and coalition troops and to eliminate threats to personnel at MSS Euphrates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that they had no connection to rebel movements against the Assad regime, stressing instead that U.S. forces are there to defeat the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/11\/19\/a-10s-and-c-130s-destroy-islamic-state-fuel-trucks\/\" target=\"_blank\">remnants of the Islamic State militant group<\/a>, or ISIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe self-defense actions \u2026 were in no way related to ongoing operations in and around Aleppo or northwest Syria,\u201d Ryder said. \u201cThe U.S. mission in Syria remains unchanged as U.S. and coalition forces continue to focus on the enduring defeat of ISIS. However, we remain fully prepared to defend and protect our personnel and assets deployed in the region to include our forces deployed to Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force deployed additional A-10s to the Middle East in October 2023, as part of the Pentagon\u2019s larger effort to move more troops and aircraft there shortly after the eruption of the war between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More A-10s have arrived since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Nov. 5, U.S. Air Forces Central Command posted a series of photographs online under the header, \u201cAdditional A-10s arrive in the Middle East.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those A-10s are part of the 107th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, deployed from the 127th Wing at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan. The photographs were from Oct. 6, but AFCENT did not say where they were taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A-10 Warthogs were heavily used during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and against ISIS.
