The upper stage of a rocket is used to propel a payload further into space after the initial booster has separated. The Centaur V was designed to be more than twice as powerful as its predecessor and to remain in orbit for as long as 12 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ULA CEO Tory Bruno told reporters Thursday the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/business\/2024\/04\/ula-has-ambitious-plan-reuse-vulcan-rocket-keep-it-space\/395858\/\" target=\"_blank\">longer-term vision is for the Centaur V<\/a> to eventually be able to remain in space for days or longer. The fast-moving vehicle would be highly maneuverable and could be used to relocate satellites or for counterspace missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Dec. 4 Medium post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2024\/10\/04\/united-launch-alliances-vulcan-flies-second-certification-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bruno fleshed out his concept<\/a> for the Centaur V to function as an in-space mobility platform, or a \u201cGreyhound.\u201d In one scenario, he described the system loitering in orbit, ready to thwart an adversary\u2019s attempts to target a Space Force asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat becomes a very powerful deterrent,\u201d he said Thursday on the sidelines of the Space Force Association\u2019s Spacepower Conference in Orlando, Fla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has an incremental plan to get to this \u201clightning fast, long range, lethal if necessary\u201d Centaur V through regular upgrades to the existing system. The modifications would happen annually, or perhaps on a more frequent cadence, and then validated on flights of its Vulcan rocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are several things that, as you put them all there, they incrementally extend that life and capability,\u201d Bruno said. \u201cAnd at the end of all of that you have the ultimate objective for duration that we intend to have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ULA\u2019s plan for its Centaur V is shaped by several variables. The company\u2019s largest competitor, Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX, has the highest annual launch rate and has embraced new concepts for reusability and rocket cargo transport<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2023\/12\/04\/will-rocket-cargo-work-data-collected-in-2024-may-hold-the-answer\/\" target=\"_blank\"> via its behemoth Starship rocket<\/a>. Concepts like upper stage mobility could expand ULA\u2019s portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also informed by a changing threat environment in space \u2014 one that Space Force officials have said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/opinion\/2024\/06\/07\/defining-dynamic-space-ops-what-it-means-to-stay-dominant-in-orbit\/\" target=\"_blank\">requires mobile satellites and spacecraft<\/a> that bring more thrust and can potentially be refueled in orbit. These maneuvering vehicles could be used to observe potential adversary activity and respond if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of U.S. Space Command, Gen. Stephen Whiting, reiterated that message Wednesday, telling reporters the service needs a system that can maneuver through space without fuel constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need some kind of capability to be maneuverable in the space domain and not be confined to only operating with the fuel, the propellant we were launched with,\u201d he said on the sidelines of the Space Force Association\u2019s Spacepower Conference in Orlando, Fla. \u201cWe want to operate until the mission is finished, not until the fuel we were launched with runs out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bruno said on Medium that he views a capability like what ULA is mapping out for Centaur V as key to the Space Force\u2019s strategy for defending against aggression from China and Russia. While much of the service\u2019s focus has been on making sure its architecture \u2014 the satellites and ground systems it relies on to provide space capabilities to other military users \u2014 is resilient against adversary attacks, he suggested that only addresses one piece of the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe ability to take a few punches and keep on communicating and watching is necessary, but insufficient,\u201d Bruno said. \u201cResiliency alone will not stop or limit an attack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mobility, he said, needs to be part of the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t mean the ability to move the assets we are trying to protect,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThat is useful and a part of resiliency.
