{"id":69090,"date":"2024-06-12T18:34:17","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T18:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/06\/12\/robotic-vehicles-to-fight-with-enemy-forces-in-army-training-event\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:10:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:10:26","slug":"robotic-vehicles-to-fight-with-enemy-forces-in-army-training-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2024\/06\/12\/robotic-vehicles-to-fight-with-enemy-forces-in-army-training-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Robotic vehicles to fight with enemy forces in Army training event"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2023\/10\/09\/robot-army-of-one-service-focuses-on-single-robotic-combat-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robotic Combat Vehicles <\/a>will fight with the opposing force in an upcoming training rotation, according to Maj. Gen. Geoff Norman, who is in charge of the service\u2019s combat vehicle modernization efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army has experimented a great deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/09\/21\/laying-the-groundwork-us-army-unveils-rough-plan-to-formalize-robotic-combat-vehicles-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\">RCV surrogates and prototypes <\/a>in recent years, including a major event that evaluated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2024\/03\/25\/the-robots-are-coming-us-army-experiments-with-human-machine-warfare\/\" target=\"_blank\">how humans and machines will fight together<\/a> on a future battlefield, the opportunity to evaluate how the service will fight an opposing force with similar robotic capability has been limited until now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norman told Defense News in an interview that there will be two National Training Center rotations this summer. A unit out of Fort Stewart in Georgia will go up against an RCV platoon. The next unit out of Fort Riley in Kansas will take the same RCV platoon and attach it to blue force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s going to be really exciting to do another round of learning and experimentation at the premier training event for those units,\u201d Norman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also this summer, the Army will receive two prototypes each from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/09\/21\/army-picks-four-to-build-robotic-combat-vehicle-prototypes\/\" target=\"_blank\">four teams competing<\/a> to build the Army\u2019s Robotic Combat Vehicle program-of-record platform. The service will then kick off a competition and \u201cpick the best of breed,\u201d Norman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prototypes will undergo automotive testing at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, beginning in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government can choose one or more of those prototypes to go forward into phase two of the program of record effort,\u201d Norman said. \u201cThe downselect decision to one or more happens in the springtime,\u201d of next year, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army selected last year McQ, Textron Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems and Oshkosh Defense to build the light RCV prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is aiming to field to the first unit in fiscal 2028 following a production decision slated for FY27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also trying to get one platoon set of RCVs to an Army Forces Command unit to continue more experimentation, but it is currently still working on resourcing the effort. \u201cWe\u2019re hopeful that materializes but that\u2019s an open issue that we\u2019re working through,\u201d Norman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, Norman\u2019s team is working closely with the armor commandant\u2019s office, the Maneuver Capability Development and Integration Directorate at Fort Moore, Georgia, to refine the organizational designs for what an RCV platoon might look like and what other equipment it might have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019ve taken the RCV playbook that we\u2019ve developed at a couple of different experiments and they\u2019re now taking that to work on some initial doctrine or probably standing operating procedure, to standardize some of the tactics, techniques and procedures that robotic autonomous systems operators need,\u201d Norman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also working prototyping control vehicles for the RCVs using an Armored Multipurpose Vehicle and a Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. The service has already developed a Stryker control vehicle prototype, according to Norman. The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle will also be configured as a control vehicle; that prototyping will follow work on the AMPV and Bradley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKey to that will be soldier touch points to get their feedback because that\u2019s been essential to get it right up to this point,\u201d Norman said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McQ,
