{"id":69188,"date":"2025-02-06T14:46:04","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T14:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/02\/06\/applied-intuition-acquires-ai-software-firm-episci\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:20:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:20:00","slug":"applied-intuition-acquires-ai-software-firm-episci","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2025\/02\/06\/applied-intuition-acquires-ai-software-firm-episci\/","title":{"rendered":"Applied Intuition acquires AI software firm EpiSci"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Software company Applied Intuition announced Thursday it acquired Silicon Valley autonomy firm EpiSci, whose technology has supported a slew of Pentagon programs aimed at integrating AI with military platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move positions Applied, which has until now focused largely on dual-use autonomous technology for land systems, to expand its portfolio into other domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of on-the-ground, land autonomy,\u201d Applied\u2019s CEO Qasar Younis told Defense News. \u201cAnd we thought one area we could augment its portfolio is in other domains \u2014 in the air and on the sea &#8230; and space as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EpiSci, founded in 2012, builds AI software for a number of defense applications, including surface warfare, maritime tracking, space-based missile tracking satellites and uncrewed aircraft. Last year, the Air Force used the company\u2019s software to stage the first-ever dogfights between an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2024\/04\/19\/us-air-force-stages-dogfights-with-ai-flown-fighter-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">F-16 and an experimental fighter jet<\/a>, the X-62A VISTA.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2024\/04\/19\/us-air-force-stages-dogfights-with-ai-flown-fighter-jet\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VISTA-F-16.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Air Force stages dogfights with AI-flown fighter jet<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Air Force hopes that teaching AI to dogfight &#8212; perhaps the hardest flying style to master &#8212; will make it easier to autonomously fly other missions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Applied has developed a suite of simulation, validation and data management software. The firm\u2019s technology is used by a range of industries \u2014 from automotive, trucking and agriculture to defense. In 2022, the Army and the Defense Innovation Unit selected the firm to provide a platform to develop and test autonomous software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appliedintuitiondefense.com\/blog\/army-selects-applied-intuition-for-robotic-combat-vehicle\" target=\"_blank\">for the Robotic Combat Vehicle program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And last month, the Pentagon\u2019s Chief Digital and AI Office awarded the company a production contract worth up to $171 million for its software development and testing platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason Brown, general manager of Applied\u2019s defense business, said the Defense Department\u2019s focus on uncrewed systems \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2025\/01\/14\/the-pentagons-replicator-drone-bonanza-faces-an-uncertain-future\/\" target=\"_blank\"> specifically through the Replicator initiative<\/a> to field thousands of low-cost expendable drones \u2014 is driving significant growth in the autonomy market. That growth means more opportunities not only for drone manufacturing firms, but for companies like Applied and EpiSci, that can equip both new and legacy systems with autonomy software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to be a part of that,\u201d Brown said in the same interview with Younis. \u201cThis is potentially retrofitting a lot of existing legacy systems. This is a big market that is about to explode.
