{"id":69211,"date":"2025-02-18T21:33:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T21:33:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/02\/18\/saronic-unveils-plans-for-autonomous-shipyard\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:14:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:14:22","slug":"saronic-unveils-plans-for-autonomous-shipyard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2025\/02\/18\/saronic-unveils-plans-for-autonomous-shipyard\/","title":{"rendered":"Saronic unveils plans for autonomous shipyard"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas-based Saronic Technologies announced Tuesday it raised $600 million in private funding to build an autonomous shipyard it\u2019s calling Port Alpha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company plans to use the facility to grow its fleet of medium- and large-class <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2024\/01\/16\/us-navys-four-unmanned-ships-return-from-pacific-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\">autonomous surface vessels<\/a> amid demand from the Pentagon for more drones of all kinds, including ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is going to be the most advanced shipyard in the world,\u201d CEO Dino Mavrookas told reporters. \u201cWe\u2019re going to build it right here in America. We\u2019re going to build it from the ground up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saronic hasn\u2019t yet picked a site for Port Alpha, but the company is working with state governments throughout the U.S. to find the right fit. Texas and the Gulf Coast are among the regions the firm is closely exploring, according to Mavrookas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company declined to offer specifics on how much the project would cost, saying only that it planned to funnel \u201cbillions and billions of dollars\u201d toward the effort over its lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mavrookas would not commit to a timeline for when the facility would open its doors, but said he expects it to be operating \u201cwell within five years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not something that we\u2019re just thinking about,\u201d he said. \u201cOur goal is to get it open as fast as possible with shipbuilding production lines, rolling things out and into the water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 2022, Saronic has raised more than $850 million and is valued at $4 billion. In just three years, the firm has developed three uncrewed vessels: Spyglass, Cutlass and Corsair \u2014 a 24-foot-long boat that it unveiled last October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company sees its systems as a solution to the U.S. Defense Department\u2019s push for more uncrewed systems and Port Alpha as a means for boosting the Navy\u2019s shipbuilding capacity. The service\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/01\/08\/navy-shipbuilding-plan-would-cost-1-trillion-over-the-next-30-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">30-year shipbuilding plan<\/a> calls for 381 battle force ships \u2014 an increase from its current fleet of 295 \u2014 and an additional 134 unmanned surface vessels over that time period, including 40 large-sized vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is also pushing toward a fully operational unmanned fleet<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2023\/04\/12\/us-navy-aims-to-field-manned-unmanned-fleet-within-10-years\/#:~:text=Conn%20said%20the%20Navy%20views,make%20these%20USVs%20operationally%20effective.\" target=\"_blank\"> by the mid-to-late 2030s<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the Navy\u2019s shipbuilders are struggling to maintain cost and schedule requirements, many of them years behind on delivering due to a number of factors, including a shrinking workforce and a lagging supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked whether he expects Port Alpha to put additional strain on that base, Rob Lehman, Saronic\u2019s chief commercial officer, said the autonomous vessels the company is building won\u2019t rely on the same manufacturing techniques, hardware and workforce that traditional shipbuilders developing manned platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at a new class of vessels with a new way of building them, unburdened by some of the constraints that the current shipbuilding industrial base is hindered by,\u201d he said. \u201cWe plan on approaching the Navy with ideas, concepts and
