{"id":69306,"date":"2025-01-13T16:19:07","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T16:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/01\/13\/marine-corps-missile-truck-first-to-be-produced-with-off-road-autonomy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:06:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:06:49","slug":"marine-corps-missile-truck-first-to-be-produced-with-off-road-autonomy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2025\/01\/13\/marine-corps-missile-truck-first-to-be-produced-with-off-road-autonomy\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps missile truck first to be produced with off-road autonomy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has awarded Oshkosh Defense a contract to integrate Forterra\u2019s autonomy package on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2023\/10\/09\/oshkosh-starting-unmanned-rogue-fires-production-line-with-40m-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary Fires ground vehicle<\/a>, the Pentagon\u2019s first-ever production contract for off-road autonomous driving capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company\u2019s advanced stack and AutoDrive system gives the ROGUE Fires vehicle \u2013 built by Oshkosh Defense \u2013 off-road, self-driving technology in \u201cnearly any environment,\u201d which moves \u201cbeyond Leader-Follower capabilities,\u201d Forterra said in a Jan. 13 statement. Leader-Follower technology uses a lead vehicle to guide other unmanned vehicles behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deal to integrate the technology comes after two ROGUE Fires Low-Rate Initial Production orders in fiscal 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy seamlessly integrating cutting-edge autonomous technologies with Oshkosh systems, we\u2019re equipping the Marine Corps to strengthen sea denial capabilities, enhance operational agility, and maintain a decisive technological edge against evolving threats,\u201d Pat Williams, Oshkosh Defense chief programs officer, said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines first awarded Oshkosh a contract to produce the unmanned missile launcher after a prototyping phase in September 2023 for $40 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ROGUE Fires design removes the cab of the Oshkosh-made Joint Light Tactical Vehicle and tacks on a missile launcher that can be remotely fired. The Marine Corps paired the ROGUE Fires system with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2021\/10\/27\/kongsberg-raytheon-ready-to-keep-up-as-naval-strike-missile-demand-grows\/\" target=\"_blank\">Naval Strike Missile<\/a> to create the Navy\/Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, or NMESIS. Oshkosh has said ROGUE Fires is payload agnostic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forterra is one of three companies also working directly with the Army\u2019s Next-Generation Combat Vehicle Cross Functional Team and Program Executive Office Ground Combat Systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/10\/16\/us-army-aims-to-pick-a-robotic-combat-vehicle-vendor-next-spring\/\" target=\"_blank\">on autonomy capability<\/a> along with Kodiak Robotics and Overland AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, the Army\u2019s evaluations for robotic combat vehicle autonomous behavior haven\u2019t even been truly off-road, Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean, program executive officer for GCS, said last fall. \u201cWe\u2019re talking trails and unimproved road conditions. Building an autonomy algorithm that can identify the entire range of things it might encounter is challenging because you have a pretty big data set.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
