{"id":69470,"date":"2024-08-22T20:05:19","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T20:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/08\/22\/us-army-picks-sierra-nevada-for-long-range-spy-plane-integration-work\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:11:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:11:42","slug":"us-army-picks-sierra-nevada-for-long-range-spy-plane-integration-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2024\/08\/22\/us-army-picks-sierra-nevada-for-long-range-spy-plane-integration-work\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army picks Sierra Nevada for long-range spy plane integration work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/isr\/2023\/11\/14\/sierra-nevada-to-supply-us-army-with-intel-gathering-jets-in-554m-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sierra Nevada Corporation<\/a> has won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2024\/04\/30\/heres-when-the-us-army-will-pick-its-next-long-range-spy-plane\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Army contract to serve as the lead system integrator<\/a> for the service\u2019s future long-range spy plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award for the High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System, or HADES, integration work covers a 12-year period worth $93.5 million initially and potentially up to $994.3 million, the Army announced Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing a lead integrator is a major step in the service\u2019s effort to overhaul existing fixed-wing aircraft that perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The service plans to retire roughly 70 aircraft \u2013 its entire ISR fleet \u2013 as it brings on the HADES aircraft that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/miltech\/2022\/06\/06\/us-army-closes-in-on-faster-jet-to-replace-guardrail-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">will be able to rapidly deploy<\/a> and provide deep-sending capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHADES is the centerpiece of the Army\u2019s long-promised aerial<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2017\/04\/19\/us-army-intelligence-bottom-up-review-underway\/\" target=\"_blank\"> ISR transformation strategy<\/a>,\u201d Lt. Gen. Anthony Hale, deputy chief of staff for Army intelligence (G-2), said in a statement announcing the deal. \u201cHADES allows the Army to fly higher, faster and farther, which directly impacts our ability to see and sense deeper, delivering an organic capability in line with the Secretary of the Army\u2019s number-one operational imperative \u2013 deep sensing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, the Army is using a large-cabin business jet \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2024\/01\/03\/bombardier-wins-us-army-contract-for-new-spy-plane-prototype\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Bombardier Global 6500<\/a> \u2013 to serve as the airframe for the spy plane. The service awarded Bombardier a contract in December for one aircraft, with an option to buy two more over a three-year period.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/06\/06\/us-army-closes-in-on-faster-jet-to-replace-guardrail-aircraft\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARTEMIS.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army closes in on faster jet to replace Guardrail aircraft<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As Artemis and Ares fly in Europe and the Pacific theater, the service is nearing a decision on what its future fixed-wing ISR capability will look like.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A L3Harris Technologies, MAG Aerospace and Leidos team was competing against Sierra Nevada for the integration contract. All four companies are involved in ISR fixed-wing prototype efforts with the Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/12\/06\/spy-demonstrator-planes-log-nearly-1000-sorties-in-europe-and-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\">more than five years assessing ISR fixed-wing prototypes<\/a> using high-speed jets to inform the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/industry\/2022\/09\/14\/l3harris-raytheon-chosen-for-next-phase-of-army-aerial-intel-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\">HADES program<\/a>. It began with the deployment of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/05\/27\/looking-at-high-speed-isr-jet-capability-us-army-deploys-demonstrator-to-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Artemis<\/a> \u2013 or Airborne Reconnaissance and Target Exploitation Multi-mission System \u2013 which has flown in the European theater near the Ukrainian border. Leidos built Artemis using a Bombardier Challenger 650 jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the service deployed Ares \u2013 or Airborne Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare System \u2013 to the Pacific region in April 2022. L3Harris built the aircraft using a Bombardier Global Express 6500 jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combined, Artemis and Ares had flown more than 1,000 sorties by April this year, according to Andrew Evans, who leads the Army\u2019s ISR Task Force. They fly roughly 10-hour missions and average 20 sorties a month, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also preparing to take on four more prototypes that will inform the requirements for the HADES program. The service chose a pair of companies to deliver two jets each with spy technologies to advance long-range targeting plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MAG Aerospace and L3Harris will outfit a Global 6500 with ISR sensors for the Army\u2019s radar-focused Athena-R effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Sierra Nevada is providing its RAPCON-X, based on a converted Bombardier business jet, for the service\u2019s signals intelligence-focused Athena-S project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that the Army has picked a team to integrate sensors onto the jet, the process will take 18 months before the aircraft can deploy for a user assessment, the Army has estimated. That assessment moves the aircraft from a controlled test environment in the United States to operational environments to stress test the systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army will deploy HADES for a limited period of time and then start building more aircraft as the early prototype remains deployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service plans to field 14 HADES aircraft by 2035, according to a slide Maj. Gen. Wally Rugen, then-director of Army aviation, displayed during a speech at the Army Aviation Association of America\u2019s annual conference in Denver in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While industry officials said they anticipate the Army will continue to award the same team subsequent contracts to build all of the HADES aircraft, Andrew Evans, who leads the Army\u2019s ISR Task Force, noted earlier this year that \u201cthe guidance to our acquisition teammates was to ensure that we give ourselves as much flexibility as possible in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using 70 \u201cvery capable\u201d Beechcraft King Air and De Havilland Canada Dash-8 aircraft, the Army, \u201chas done some enormous and powerful work in support of the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan\u201d Evans said. But the existing fleet won\u2019t be able to fulfill l<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/04\/03\/pacific-problems-why-the-us-disagrees-on-the-cost-of-deterring-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">ong-range missions off the coast of China <\/a>\u2014 which the U.S. government considers its top threat \u2014 \u201cor really almost any other place in the world if you\u2019re
