{"id":69762,"date":"2024-10-15T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/10\/15\/how-the-army-is-maturing-tech-for-an-air-defense-cannon\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:12:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:12:21","slug":"how-the-army-is-maturing-tech-for-an-air-defense-cannon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2024\/10\/15\/how-the-army-is-maturing-tech-for-an-air-defense-cannon\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Army is maturing tech for an air defense cannon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is maturing technology for a cannon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2024\/08\/09\/army-to-test-hypervelocity-projectile-for-155mm-cannon-artillery\/\" target=\"_blank\">capable of firing hypervelocity projectiles<\/a> for the air defense mission, according to the director of the service\u2019s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RCCTO, which stood up a product office for the Multidomain Artillery Cannon system in July, is assessing hypervelocity gun system work already completed by the Pentagon\u2019s Strategic Capabilities Office, as well as data from its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/03\/11\/us-army-scraps-extended-range-cannon-artillery-prototype-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\">canceled Extended Range Cannon Artillery, or ERCA, system<\/a> to inform the prototype\u2019s development, Lt. Gen. Robert Rasch told Defense News in an interview ahead of the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the ERCA cannon is an offensive capability, the MDACS fits in \u201cas part of an air defense construct in a similar space, from a threat perspective, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/12\/19\/us-armys-new-fire-protection-system-launches-interceptor-in-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">[the Indirect Fire Protection Capability]<\/a>,\u201d Rasch said. \u201c[But it has] slightly better performance, we believe, in some areas, and also potentially a lower cost-per-shot, which makes it very attractive to the Army.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ERCA, a 58-caliber cannon mounted on a Paladin Integrated Management howitzer, was intended to nearly double the range of current artillery systems \u2014 from roughly 30-40 kilometers out to 70 kilometers and beyond. It was canceled this year in favor of searching for more readily available capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IFPC system is designed to defend fixed and semi-fixed sites from rockets, artillery and mortars, as well as cruise missiles and drones. The first interceptor to be used in the IFPC system is Raytheon\u2019s AIM-9X missile, but the Army is currently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/01\/25\/us-army-seeks-new-interceptor-to-counter-cruise-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\"> looking for additional interceptors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service has consistently been on the wrong side of the cost curve when it comes to defeating air threats since the proliferation of drones on the battlefield, having to shoot Patriot interceptors at cheap drones in some instances, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prototype cannon that RCCTO is developing will use both the PIM chassis and the 58-caliber cannon, Rasch said, along with the new hypervelocity projectile and a multifunction precision radar tuned for surveillance and the ability to track high-speed rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system will also have a multidomain battle manager that would tie into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/04\/12\/us-army-greenlights-key-battle-command-system-for-full-rate-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">Integrated Battle Command System, or IBCS,<\/a> the central nervous system of missile defense that ties sensors and shooters together across the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much like the RCCTO did with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/04\/16\/us-army-deploys-midrange-missile-for-first-time-in-philippines\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mid-Range Capability missile<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2024\/08\/08\/armys-successful-hypersonic-missile-test-puts-fielding-on-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon,<\/a> it will build a battery of capability \u2014 once the technology is ready \u2014 and \u201cget it to a unit to &#8230; put it through its paces in an operationally relevant environment,\u201d Rasch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doing so will allow officials to \u201csee how it really fits in our construct,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Strategic Capabilities Office \u201chas leveraged some of the components\u201d from the ERCA system, according to Rasch, but the office has made modifications where necessary to overcome some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/10\/11\/army-test-will-show-how-many-shots-its-long-range-cannon-can-take\/\" target=\"_blank\">technological issues, including gun tube wear and tear, the ERCA program ran into.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is probably one of the bigger issues and concerns,\u201d Rasch said, but in addition to design changes, \u201cyou also have to think about the mission that we\u2019re developing and designing the system to go do \u2014 execute an air defense mission \u2014 which is a different mission set than a long-range artillery mission. \u2026 We\u2019re not going to be shooting volleys of artillery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldier assessment will also determine whether the wear on a cannon occurring earlier than would be expected on a traditional system is worth the capability it delivers, Rasch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to prove that out over the next couple of years,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work within the Strategic Capabilities Office, meanwhile, \u201chas put us well down the path on some of the technical challenges, some of the robustness challenges and reliability challenges that we were having with early ERCA,\u201d Rash said. \u201cWe\u2019ve already made some design implementations that will mitigate some of those as we continue to put the system to the test.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is waiting for Congress to appropriate fiscal 2025 funding for the program, but the service\u2019s goal, according to Rasch, is to get a prototype battery out and into soldiers\u2019 hands in FY27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service would then hope to hold an operational assessment in FY28, doing so with a battery comprising eight cannons, four MFPRs and two multidomain battle managers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developing a capability along the lines of a defensive cannon system will also take some pressure off expensive air defense units, which also have some of the highest operational tempos across the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the past, it\u2019s been, \u2018We need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/04\/09\/how-patriot-proved-itself-in-ukraine-and-secured-a-fresh-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">Patriot [air and missile defense]<\/a>\u2019 &#8230; [so] we end up sending the whole Patriot battalion,\u201d Rasch said. \u201c[But] there is a strong desire from the Army to have the flexibility in how we employ air defense capability based upon the
