{"id":70263,"date":"2025-05-16T15:11:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T15:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/05\/16\/amid-demand-for-satellite-support-space-force-leans-on-commercial\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:20:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:20:04","slug":"amid-demand-for-satellite-support-space-force-leans-on-commercial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2025\/05\/16\/amid-demand-for-satellite-support-space-force-leans-on-commercial\/","title":{"rendered":"Amid demand for satellite support, Space Force leans on commercial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force this week announced a new Joint Antenna Marketplace aimed at helping it leverage commercial capacity and relieve the strain on its Satellite Control Network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space Systems Command said Monday it awarded contracts to two firms \u2014 Auria, formerly Boecore, and Sphinx Defense \u2014 to establish the cloud-based marketplace prototype, dubbed JAM, which will connect satellite operations centers with government and commercial antennas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service said Monday it\u2019s using the Pentagon\u2019s software acquisition pathway to create the marketplace, a tailored procurement method meant to help programs buy software more quickly. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2025\/03\/07\/hegseth-mandates-streamlined-software-acquisition-approach-in-new-memo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2025\/03\/07\/hegseth-mandates-streamlined-software-acquisition-approach-in-new-memo\/\">Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently mandated<\/a> that all military software be developed and purchased through the pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe program is currently in the planning phase of the Software Acquisition Pathway and is accelerating commercial capability delivery via prototype development,\u201d SSC said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JAM will expand the Space Force\u2019s existing globally dispersed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2024\/12\/12\/new-antennas-for-the-satellite-control-network-are-coming-next-year\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2024\/12\/12\/new-antennas-for-the-satellite-control-network-are-coming-next-year\/\"> Satellite Control Network, or SCN<\/a>, which provides critical launch support, satellite tracking and control, and emergency assistance for spacecraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department and other federal agencies rely on the network for operations support, and demand for the capability has grown significantly in recent years. For the last decade, utilization rates have surpassed the industry standard, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-23-105505\" rel=\"\">a 2023 Government Accountability Office report<\/a>. Space Force officials have said the current SCN architecture on its own may not meet the military\u2019s capacity needs during a conflict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The antennas in line to augment and eventually replace SCN\u2019s aging infrastructure through a program called Satellite Communications Augmentation Resource, or SCAR, are expected to increase satellite communications capacity by ten-fold for spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit, the Space Force estimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new phased-array antennas are being built by BlueHalo. The systems, dubbed Badger, provide<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/c2-comms\/2019\/07\/30\/a-new-satellite-antenna-could-save-the-air-force-time-and-money\/\" rel=\"\"> multi-beam, multi-orbit mission operations<\/a> and are designed to make it easier to track and manage satellites. They can also be easily transported around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force awarded the company $1.4 billion in 2022 to deliver 12 units by the early 2030s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, under its current schedule, the first units won\u2019t deliver until the end of this year \u2013 a timeline that the service\u2019s acting acquisition executive says is not fast enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. Stephen Purdy told lawmakers Thursday that while SCAR is making progress, the program is moving \u201ctoo slow for my taste and too slow for the need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at a House Armed Services Committee hearing, he said that along with helping the Space Force better leverage commercial systems, JAM provides a \u201cbackup plan\u201d for SCAR that provides the extra support in the near term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JAM builds on experimentation the service has conducted with the Space Development Agency and the Space Rapid Capabilities Office to integrate commercial capabilities through a cloud-based SCN. The marketplace \u201cis going after full-up commercial,\u201d Purdy said, and will open up significant new capacity. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The service awarded
