{"id":70288,"date":"2025-07-31T14:28:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T14:28:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/07\/31\/austria-is-torn-over-age-old-question-of-neutrality-and-nato\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:20:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:20:41","slug":"austria-is-torn-over-age-old-question-of-neutrality-and-nato","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2025\/07\/31\/austria-is-torn-over-age-old-question-of-neutrality-and-nato\/","title":{"rendered":"Austria is torn over age-old question of neutrality and NATO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE HAGUE, Netherlands \u2014 Key political figures in historically neutral Austria have reignited a debate about the country\u2019s future relationship with NATO and whether Vienna might be better off joining the alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The renewed public debate follows comments made by the country\u2019s foreign minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, to the German newspaper <i>Die Welt am Sonntag<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is currently no majority in parliament or among the population in favor of joining NATO,\u201d Meinl-Reisinger said, \u201cbut such a debate could still be very productive.\u201d She noted that \u201cneutrality alone does not protect us.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments sparked fierce outrage from parts of the political spectrum in Vienna. Gallup polling from last year \u2013 two years into Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine \u2013 showed that less than a quarter of Austrians were in favor of joining NATO, while 74% supported maintaining the country\u2019s \u201ceverlasting neutrality,\u201d which has been enshrined in the country\u2019s constitution since its independence from Allied occupation forces in 1955.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially the extreme-right Austrian Freedom Party, which has close ties to Russia and President Vladimir Putin personally, clapped back hard, saying in an urgent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parlament.gv.at\/aktuelles\/pk\/jahr_2025\/pk0282\" rel=\"\">parliamentary inquiry<\/a> that Meinl-Reisinger was acting \u201cas an extended arm of the Brussels armaments agenda.\u201d Members of the Freedom Party have been critical of European defense integration and of the Western effort to support Ukraine in its fight against the full-scale Russian invasion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amid an unprecedented budget crunch and drastic spending cuts in Vienna, defense spending continues to increase year over year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meinl-Reisinger, now serving as Austria\u2019s foreign minister, is also the head of one of the three parties making up the ruling coalition in Vienna. Her economic-liberal NEOS party stands out from its coalition partners, the conservative People\u2019s Party and the Social Democrats, for having a much warmer stance on NATO and <a href=\"https:\/\/lab.neos.eu\/thinktank\/glossar\/eu-armee\" rel=\"\">advocating<\/a> for a joint European army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEOS has also repeatedly urged discussions about the modern-day relevance of Austria\u2019s \u201ceverlasting\u201d neutrality, which was implemented at least in part at Soviet urging during the early Cold War. Other parties have shied away from this political hot topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small country like Austria can only defend its interests in a \u201ccommon and strong Europe,\u201d Meinl-Reisinger told assembled parliamentarians in defense of her foreign policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austria, which is already covered by the EU\u2019s mutual defense clause \u2013 a point that Meinl-Reisinger is quick to point out \u2013 is part of a vanishing breed in the European Union. Only a handful of EU countries still maintain neutrality, and of them, Austria, with its population of 9 million, is the largest. Finland and Sweden, longtime neutral countries that maintained this policy throughout the entirety of the Cold War, famously dropped it to join NATO in 2023 and 2024, respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to its EU membership, which some view as limiting the country\u2019s neutrality, Austria is also a member of NATO\u2019s Partnership for Peace initiative, coordinating and training alongside the alliance. It also serves as a key transit country for NATO, with more than 3,000 military transports and over 5,000 NATO overflights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parlament.gv.at\/dokument\/XXVIII\/AB\/1867\/imfname_1701455.pdf\" rel=\"\">taking place<\/a> in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time and again, there are public protests for maintaining the country\u2019s neutrality and steering well clear of NATO. A \u201clarge demonstration\u201d in Vienna has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stimmenfuerneutralitaet.at\/\" rel=\"\">announced<\/a> for October. Many of these protests also criticize Western support for Ukraine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not that I want to join NATO with open arms,\u201d Meinl-Reisinger said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welt.de\/politik\/ausland\/article68834e7c0e680a76f4e95342\/oesterreichs-aussenministerin-irgendwann-tuermen-sich-die-saerge-in-russland.html\" rel=\"\">interview<\/a> with <i>Die Welt am Sonntag<\/i>. \u201cBut we can\u2019t sit back and believe that no one will harm us if we don\u2019t hurt anyone. That would be naive.
