{"id":70321,"date":"2025-05-20T15:18:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T15:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/05\/20\/rtx-delivers-first-radar-to-mda-that-can-track-hypersonic-weapons\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:20:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:20:06","slug":"rtx-delivers-first-radar-to-mda-that-can-track-hypersonic-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2025\/05\/20\/rtx-delivers-first-radar-to-mda-that-can-track-hypersonic-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"RTX delivers first radar to MDA that can track hypersonic weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon has delivered the first missile defense radar to the Missile Defense Agency upgraded with the capability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2024\/06\/14\/missile-defense-agency-satellites-track-first-hypersonic-launch\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2024\/06\/14\/missile-defense-agency-satellites-track-first-hypersonic-launch\/\">track hypersonic weapons<\/a>, the company announced Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MDA has long used AN\/TPY-2 radars to track ballistic missiles, but this new version <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2016\/02\/27\/gan-based-patriot-prototype-preps-for-public-debut\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2016\/02\/27\/gan-based-patriot-prototype-preps-for-public-debut\/\">features a Gallium Nitride, or GaN, populated array<\/a>, Raytheon said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new AN\/TPY-2 X-band radar is the 13th system to be delivered to the agency but the first with the technology. It will be a part of the U.S. Army\u2019s eighth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/01\/21\/thaad-in-first-operational-use-destroys-midrange-ballistic-missile-in-houthi-attack\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/01\/21\/thaad-in-first-operational-use-destroys-midrange-ballistic-missile-in-houthi-attack\/\">Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radars can be used in a forward-based mode, providing cuing data to systems like the U.S. Navy\u2019s Aegis ballistic missile defense system or the Army\u2019s Patriot missile defense system. It serves as the primary radar for the Army\u2019s THAAD system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GaN is technology already integrated into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/04\/21\/next-gen-air-defense-radar-approved-for-low-rate-production\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/04\/21\/next-gen-air-defense-radar-approved-for-low-rate-production\/\">Army\u2019s Lower-Tier Air and Missile Defense System<\/a> radar, which was approved for low-rate production last month and will serve as the new tracking sensor for the Patriot air-and-missile defense system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon has its own GaN foundry in Andover, Massachusetts, and has worked to develop the capability over decades that allows the radar to run \u201cat twice the power that we had before,\u201d John Norman, company vice president of requirements and capabilities for Raytheon Air and Space Defense Systems, told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have twice the sensitivity, twice the range. It\u2019s just incredibly efficient,\u201d he said. \u201cNow we\u2019re able to see those targets coming in, to be able to discriminate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GaN allows for greater fidelity to see when a warhead separates from a missile body, as well as whether there are decoys present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to have much greater target specificity,\u201d Norman added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hypersonic threats fly at speeds greater than Mach 5 and are maneuverable in the glide phase of flight, making them very difficult to track. This means it\u2019s important to defeat hypersonic weapons earlier in flight at greater ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new radar is \u201cgoing to enable them to fire at those targets earlier in the engagement cycle,\u201d Norman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology also has a longer time in between failures or maintenance needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is just operational more often,\u201d Norman said. \u201cThat resolves like 90% of the angst that we had doing that mission set because the missiles are always there, the firing batteries are always there, but it\u2019s having the sensors to make sure you have the coverage of the area you\u2019re trying to defend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While MDA is the first U.S. entity to receive the AN\/TPY-2 radar with GaN, Saudi Arabia was the first to receive the upgraded version, according to Norman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon is now working with the Army on how to take advantage of the company\u2019s investments to upgrade the systems it has in operation. They\u2019re also trying to address other modernization needs, such as integrating new computer components and signal data processing equipment to free up space in the electronics unit, which will
