{"id":70338,"date":"2025-06-03T14:12:51","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T14:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/06\/03\/pentagon-prize-challenge-seeks-ready-now-uncrewed-systems\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:23:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:23:52","slug":"pentagon-prize-challenge-seeks-ready-now-uncrewed-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2025\/06\/03\/pentagon-prize-challenge-seeks-ready-now-uncrewed-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon prize challenge seeks \u2018ready-now\u2019 uncrewed systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a push to get military kit to the field more quickly, the Defense Innovation Unit is launching a prize challenge called Project G.I. to help the military services test and scale uncrewed systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DIU on Monday released a solicitation for the effort, calling for companies to proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2025\/03\/14\/defense-innovation-unit-picks-four-firms-to-test-one-way-drones\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2025\/03\/14\/defense-innovation-unit-picks-four-firms-to-test-one-way-drones\/\">\u201cready-now\u201d uncrewed systems<\/a> that can help increase the effectiveness of small military cells operating in low-bandwidth environments with disrupted communications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSolutions should fundamentally improve how tactical formations sense, decide and strike, independent of consistent communication or extensive logistical support,\u201d DIU said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DIU is establishing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diu.mil\/latest\/usd20m-diu-project-g-i-challenge-targets-next-generation-uas-solutions\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.diu.mil\/latest\/usd20m-diu-project-g-i-challenge-targets-next-generation-uas-solutions\">$20 million prize pool for Project G.I.<\/a>, and the solicitation will stay open through the end of the year on a rolling basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies whose systems are selected will participate in a live demonstration with military operators. Based on user feedback, DIU will choose vendors to move into the next phase where they\u2019ll either receive cash prizes to invest in maturing their systems, be awarded procurement contracts to deliver their capabilities to military units for further testing and training or be issued a contract for further prototyping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking Monday at the Special Competitive Studies Project\u2019s AI Expo in Washington, D.C., DIU Director Doug Beck said the intent of Project G.I. is to get systems to operators more quickly by testing them in a live operational test environment. The project gives users a chance to \u201ctest, plan and learn\u201d and provide feedback that can be quickly implemented and re-tested, he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Project G.I. also allows the services to take advantage of DIU\u2019s flexible funding and bypass a budget cycle that can take years to wade through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDIU is laser focused on getting best-of-breed technology in the hands of the warfighter today and scaling it for training, adoption, and readiness,\u201d Beck said in a statement. \u201cDoing this at speed will in turn help catalyze the necessary scaling and readiness through major acquisition and training efforts across the services that will deliver strategic impact \u2014 and will simultaneously support the flywheel of American private sector dynamism in delivering against that strategic need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first Project G.I. demonstration will be with
