{"id":70556,"date":"2025-06-13T15:46:03","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T15:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/06\/13\/tech-execs-enlist-in-army-reserve-for-new-innovation-detachment\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:24:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:24:05","slug":"tech-execs-enlist-in-army-reserve-for-new-innovation-detachment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2025\/06\/13\/tech-execs-enlist-in-army-reserve-for-new-innovation-detachment\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech execs enlist in Army Reserve for new innovation detachment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/12\/06\/defense-tech-firms-establish-ai-focused-consortium\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/12\/06\/defense-tech-firms-establish-ai-focused-consortium\/\">Silicon Valley technology executives from major companies <\/a>are joining the U.S Army Reserve as officers to inject the speed and expertise of commercial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2025\/02\/13\/survival-of-the-quickest-military-leaders-aim-to-unleash-control-ai\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2025\/02\/13\/survival-of-the-quickest-military-leaders-aim-to-unleash-control-ai\/\">technology development into military innovation<\/a> through the newly established Detachment 201, an Executive Innovation Corps, the service announced Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon has long turned to civilian experts for technological insight, from World War II-era scientists to modern advisory boards like the Defense Innovation Board. Detachment 201 takes the desire to collaborate with the high-technology industry to a new level: embedding senior tech execs directly into the Army Reserve as uniformed officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those first Army Reserve lieutenant colonels, who will be sworn in today are Shyam Sankar, Palantir\u2019s chief technology officer; Andrew Bosworth, chief technology officer of Meta; Kevin Weil, OpenAI\u2019s chief product officer; and Bob McGrew, an advisor at Thinking Machines Lab and former chief research officer for OpenAI, the Army statement lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheir swearing-in is just the start of a bigger mission to inspire more tech pros to serve without leaving their careers, showing the next generation how to make a difference in uniform,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their roles in Det. 201, \u201cthey will work on targeted projects to help guide rapid and scalable tech solutions to complex problems,\u201d the Army said. \u201cBy bringing private-sector know-how into uniform, Det. 201 is supercharging efforts like the Army Transformation Initiative, which aims to make the force leaner, smarter and more lethal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Secretary Dan Driscoll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/05\/01\/secdef-wields-axe-to-brass-hqs-formations-to-fashion-leaner-army\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/05\/01\/secdef-wields-axe-to-brass-hqs-formations-to-fashion-leaner-army\/\">unveiled the initiative last month in a memo <\/a>to the force laying out major changes to the command structure, formation make-up, canceling programs deemed out of the scope of the Army\u2019s desired modernization pathway, and accelerating programs the service wants in order to become a more lethal and agile force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The executives come from companies who have been entrenching themselves in military technology development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/29\/palantir-who-successfully-sued-the-army-just-won-a-major-army-contract\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/29\/palantir-who-successfully-sued-the-army-just-won-a-major-army-contract\/\">After a rough start,<\/a> Palantir has been a cornerstone of Army modernization for years, providing everything from an intelligence analytics system called the Distributed Common Ground System-Army to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/12\/18\/us-army-extends-palantirs-contract-for-its-data-harnessing-platform\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/12\/18\/us-army-extends-palantirs-contract-for-its-data-harnessing-platform\/\">Vantage data platform<\/a>, which is under a contract and supports 100,000 users, to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2024\/03\/06\/army-chooses-palantir-to-build-next-generation-targeting-system\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2024\/03\/06\/army-chooses-palantir-to-build-next-generation-targeting-system\/\">Titan system <\/a>that gives the service deep-sensing and sensor-fusion capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palantir, along with a variety of other major companies like Google and Anduril, is also working with the Army as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/04\/01\/us-army-punches-the-gas-on-next-gen-command-and-control\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/04\/01\/us-army-punches-the-gas-on-next-gen-command-and-control\/\">develops a new command-and-control architecture from the ground up.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI and Meta have also pivoted to embrace military applications. OpenAI has partnered with Anduril on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/03\/28\/army-looks-to-artificial-intelligence-to-enhance-future-golden-dome\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/03\/28\/army-looks-to-artificial-intelligence-to-enhance-future-golden-dome\/\">artificial-intelligence-enhanced air-defense systems<\/a>, for example. Meta has also begun partnering with other companies like Anduril to work on AI tools for the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thinking Machines Lab, which employs a large number of former OpenAI developers including its co-founder, was established earlier this year. Its foundational focus is human-AI collaboration, a key necessity for the Army as it works on how to best i<a
