{"id":70764,"date":"2025-06-24T21:10:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T21:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/06\/24\/after-years-long-delay-missile-tracking-radar-test-declared-a-success\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:24:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:24:22","slug":"after-years-long-delay-missile-tracking-radar-test-declared-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2025\/06\/24\/after-years-long-delay-missile-tracking-radar-test-declared-a-success\/","title":{"rendered":"After years-long delay, missile tracking radar test declared a success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a delay of nearly two years, the Missile Defense Agency has declared a successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2024\/08\/19\/key-homeland-defense-radar-test-is-back-on-the-calendar-after-anomaly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2024\/08\/19\/key-homeland-defense-radar-test-is-back-on-the-calendar-after-anomaly\/\">test of its Long-Range Discrimination Radar\u2019s<\/a> ability to track a live ballistic missile target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a June 23 test, the LRDR at Clear Space Force Station, Alaska, \u201csuccessfully acquired, tracked and reported missile target data to the Command and Control Battle Management and Communications (C2BMC),\u201d according to a recent MDA announcement. \u201cThis was the radar\u2019s first flight test tracking a live Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) representative target.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The target was air launched over the northern Pacific Ocean, according to MDA, and flew over 2,0000 kilometers (roughly 1,243 miles) off the southern coast of Alaska. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tracking data from LRDR as well as the Upgraded Early Warning Radar, also at Clear Space Force Station, was sent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air-warfare\/2025\/03\/04\/boeing-grows-alaska-based-homeland-missile-defense-silo-count-by-20\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air-warfare\/2025\/03\/04\/boeing-grows-alaska-based-homeland-missile-defense-silo-count-by-20\/\">Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system<\/a> as part of the simulated engagement, the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key test was rescheduled after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2023\/09\/01\/missile-defense-agency-cancels-test-of-long-range-discrimination-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2023\/09\/01\/missile-defense-agency-cancels-test-of-long-range-discrimination-radar\/\">the original was halted<\/a> in 2023 due to a \u201ctarget anomaly,\u201d Missile Defense Agency Director Lt. Gen. Heath Collins told Defense News in an August 2024 interview. \u201cWe did do a track [exercise] the next month with another target that was \u2026 not as complicated a target set and it worked very well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency\u2019s biggest concern was to get the radar into operations faster following<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2020\/08\/07\/alaska-based-long-range-ballistic-missile-defense-radar-fielding-delayed-by-a-year\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2020\/08\/07\/alaska-based-long-range-ballistic-missile-defense-radar-fielding-delayed-by-a-year\/\"> a series of other delays <\/a> \u2014 including the coronavirus pandemic \u2014 leading up to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/12\/06\/us-missile-defense-agency-declares-initial-delivery-of-long-range-discrimination-radar-in-alaska\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/12\/06\/us-missile-defense-agency-declares-initial-delivery-of-long-range-discrimination-radar-in-alaska\/\">initial fielding in December 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MDA had to stop all construction and integration activities for LRDR when the coronavirus began spreading in the U.S. in March 2020. The program went into \u201ccaretaker status,\u201d meaning just a small group stayed at the site to ensure the materials were protected from the elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful test will now inform a decision to add it into the operational baseline for ballistic missile defense of the homeland. Formal operational acceptance of the LRDR by the U.S. Space Force was planned to occur by the end of 2023 prior to the canceled 2023 test event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once fully operational, the Lockheed Martin-developed LRDR will be able to simultaneously search and track multiple small objects, including all classes of ballistic missiles at long ranges under continuous operation and will be tied into the GMD system and the C2BMC system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GMD architecture is designed to protect the continental U.S. from intercontinental ballistic missile threats from North Korea and Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond missile defense, LRDR will also support space domain awareness by monitoring space activity like satellites orbiting the earth, spent rocket bodies and fragmentation debris. And while not an official requirement, a software upgrade could give LRDR hypersonic weapon detection and tracking capability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A successful test of
