{"id":71164,"date":"2025-12-09T22:45:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T22:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/12\/09\/us-air-force-wants-ai-to-power-high-speed-wargaming\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:30:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:30:29","slug":"us-air-force-wants-ai-to-power-high-speed-wargaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2025\/12\/09\/us-air-force-wants-ai-to-power-high-speed-wargaming\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force wants AI to power high-speed wargaming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Air Force is turning to artificial intelligence to boost its wargames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force wants a cloud-based, AI-powered \u201cdigital sandbox\u201d as a hub to generate and run wargames at speeds of up 10,000 times faster than real time, according to a recent request for information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The WarMatrix system aims to remedy some of the problems that have hampered defense wargaming for years, such as cumbersome, labor-intensive simulations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCurrently, the DAF [Department of the Air Force] faces challenges including the inability to answer critical questions about capabilities, Courses of Action (COA) analysis, or costing, due to a reliance on disconnected, outdated, and vendor-locked tools,\u201d according to the Air Force RFI, which was posted Nov. 23. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis initiative marks a revolutionary shift from traditional, analog methods to a fully digitized and scientific approach,\u201d the Air Force proclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2025\/11\/24\/new-lab-offers-generative-ai-for-defense-wargaming\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VR-chess-match.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New lab offers generative AI for defense wargaming<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The hope is that AI players are realistic enough to facilitate the creation of multiple strategies during a wargaming exercise. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is ambitious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWarMatrix is a toolkit and orchestration environment that enables rapid scenario creation and provides a common analytical workflow with human on the loop adjudication,\u201d an Air Force spokesperson told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, the Air Force is seeking \u201ctechnologies capable of delivering simulations at super real-time speeds, ideally accelerating simulation processes up to 10,000x real-time,\u201d said the RFI. For tasks such as experimenting with force design, logistics and battle plans, WarMatrix could run hundreds or thousands of iterations in the time that it would take a tabletop game to run one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the system \u201cmust be scalable to hundreds of users and tens of thousands of entities, and must be built to operate across classification levels (Unclassified, Secret, TS\/SCI\/SAP),\u201d the RFI said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It must also be compatible with existing Air Force simulations such as AFSIM \u2014 as well as simulations of other military services \u2014 with an interface that transforms \u201cthe high barriers to entry\u201d and makes the Defense Department\u2019s \u201csimulation arsenal accessible to every airman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe system is designed as a joint wargaming tool with the government acting as the lead integrator rather than outsourcing design and implementation,\u201d said the Air Force spokesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is relying on AI to solve many of the problems that have afflicted defense wargaming, such as weak computer opponents that had difficulty with routine tasks like marching a tank column down a road. Some computer simulations have had to rely on \u201cpucksters,\u201d human players who sit at computer terminals and control enemy forces in the game and thus function as a sort of human AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew Caffrey, former chief of wargaming at the Air Force Research Laboratory, recalled the problems with big computer models used to adjudicate wargames. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They \u201cwould be too slow to adjudicate four moves in a week, so expert panels would adjudicate the moves and the big models would continue to run after the wargame, we were told, for post-game analysis,\u201d he told Defense News. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Air Force envisions taking advantage of AI to create sophisticated computer players that can act competently and realistically. In WarMatrix, \u201cevery entity is represented as an autonomous agent that reacts to real-time events,\u201d said the RFI. The simulation system would incorporate effects such as jamming and cyber warfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particularly welcome to harried wargame designers and umpires will be WarMatrix\u2019s ability to handle much of the administrative burden of wargaming. For example, the Air Force wants \u201cLLMs capable of facilitating real-time transcription and diarization of qualitative data (e.g., commander discussions) to enable rapid analysis during and after events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI could also function as an adviser to help players create courses of action, \u201cutilizing a neuro-symbolic process to rank options with risk assessments and resource tradeoffs,\u201d the RFI said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite DOD\u2019s rocky history with elaborate computer simulations, the Air Force says it will avoid those mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWarMatrix fuses both computational precision and human insight, ensuring decisions are transparent, and strategically sound,\u201d the spokesperson. \u201cCompute and tooling, data integration, a human-centered design, and auditable trails address shortcomings of \u2018black box\u2019 mega-sims by making assumptions and outcomes inspectable and integrated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis tool is being built by wargamers for wargamers,\u201d the spokesperson
