{"id":71203,"date":"2025-05-14T17:39:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T17:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/05\/14\/heres-whos-getting-the-armys-first-long-range-assault-aircraft\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:23:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:23:02","slug":"heres-whos-getting-the-armys-first-long-range-assault-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2025\/05\/14\/heres-whos-getting-the-armys-first-long-range-assault-aircraft\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s who\u2019s getting the Army\u2019s first long-range assault aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASHVILLE, Tenn. \u2013 The U.S. Army will field its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/04\/28\/us-army-finalizing-future-aircraft-design-with-hopes-to-field-faster\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2025\/04\/28\/us-army-finalizing-future-aircraft-design-with-hopes-to-field-faster\/\">first Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft<\/a>, commonly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2022\/12\/05\/us-army-makes-largest-helicopter-award-in-40-years\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2022\/12\/05\/us-army-makes-largest-helicopter-award-in-40-years\/\"> known as FLRAA<\/a>, to the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the Army vice chief of staff told an audience at the Army Aviation Association of America\u2019s annual conference Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat decision was based on their mission profile and theater demands,\u201d Gen. James Mingus said in prepared remarks. \u201cThis decision makes sense, the 101st is a formation built to deploy rapidly and operate in austere conditions. The 101st flies into real world contested environments, across wide terrain, often without the luxury of fixed support infrastructure. They need speed, endurance, and reliability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operational insights from that first fielding \u201cwill shape initial doctrine, sustainment models, and maneuver concepts,\u201d Mingus stated. \u201cAnd we\u2019re not waiting for a distant out-year to make this thing real. Under the Army Transformation Initiative, we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2024\/04\/25\/us-army-to-field-long-range-combat-aircraft-to-first-unit-in-fy31\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2024\/04\/25\/us-army-to-field-long-range-combat-aircraft-to-first-unit-in-fy31\/\">driving to get this aircraft online years ahead of schedule<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Army will field these first aircraft remains to be seen, but the service has recently vowed to move faster to build and field <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/08\/02\/armys-long-range-tiltrotor-aircraft-moves-to-next-development-phase\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/08\/02\/armys-long-range-tiltrotor-aircraft-moves-to-next-development-phase\/\">the first FLRAA<\/a> that is presently expected to be delivered in 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe expect to field the first aircraft in 2030 and that\u2019s according to the plan as it stands today,\u201d Col. Jeffrey Poquette, the service\u2019s project manager for the program, told Defense News in an interview earlier this spring. He added that there \u201care opportunities &#8230; the Army is looking at to potentially see if we can go do something different and there\u2019s different risks for going faster.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George testified during a recent House Appropriations defense subcommittee hearing that he thinks the Army could move up the timeline to 2028. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re just figuring out what we can do by working with them on how we can pull it as far left,\u201d George said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is finalizing its design for FLRAA by the end of the year that will ultimately take the place of UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2017\/12\/18\/v-280-valor-flies\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2017\/12\/18\/v-280-valor-flies\/\">Bell beat out Lockheed Martin\u2019s Sikorsky<\/a> and a Boeing team following a competitive technology demonstration phase, in which each company built a flying demonstrator. Sikorsky and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/21\/sikorsky-boeing-defiant-helo-takes-first-flight\/#:~:text=The%20SB-1%20Defiant%20flew%20for%20more%20than%2030,the%20aircraft%20extensively%20before%20flight%20to%20reduce%20risk.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/21\/sikorsky-boeing-defiant-helo-takes-first-flight\/#:~:text=The%20SB-1%20Defiant%20flew%20for%20more%20than%2030,the%20aircraft%20extensively%20before%20flight%20to%20reduce%20risk.\">Boeing\u2019s Defiant X<\/a> featured coaxial rotor blades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design process for FLRAA, which will culminate in a critical design review either sometime toward the end of this fiscal year or in the beginning of the next, has allowed the Army to move much faster than in previous aircraft development programs, Poquette said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we had our &#8230; preliminary design review we got to see and have access to that design on a level we\u2019ve never had, which is going to make for a much better CDR,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have a compressed test schedule.
