The shipyard will produce LNG carriers, naval modules and eventually U.S. naval vessels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Present at the announcement in Philadelphia was South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who also took part in a ceremony to christen a new training vessel for the U.S. Maritime Administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Republic of Korea\u2019s shipbuilding industry is setting out to take on a new challenge to contribute to strengthening U.S. maritime security and rejuvenating America\u2019s shipbuilding industry,\u201d said Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/article\/10562468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/article\/10562468\">at the event<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the HD Hyundai conglomerate, the owners of South Korea\u2019s largest shipyard, announced this week the merger of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Mipo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/maritime-executive.com\/article\/hd-hyundai-to-merge-ulsan-shipyards-to-expand-defense-and-commercial-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/maritime-executive.com\/article\/hd-hyundai-to-merge-ulsan-shipyards-to-expand-defense-and-commercial-work\">merger will consolidate<\/a> its shipbuilding facilities located in Ulsan and expand HD Hyundai\u2019s output as it seeks further cooperation with the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HD Hyundai is a leader in producing an array of vessels, including submarines, and is reportedly looking to expand its production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/06\/25\/nato-should-break-the-ice-on-unmanned-systems-for-icebreakers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/06\/25\/nato-should-break-the-ice-on-unmanned-systems-for-icebreakers\/\">icebreakers.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea is a global heavyweight in shipbuilding, combining longtime tradition with technologically sophisticated shipyards that can churn out vessels at high speed with the power of smart technology and automated tools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the U.S. seeks to expand its maritime power to keep pace with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/08\/25\/china-debuts-new-warship-boosts-south-pacific-presence\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/08\/25\/china-debuts-new-warship-boosts-south-pacific-presence\/\">an increasingly aggressive China<\/a>, South Korean manufacturers are stepping in to help kick-start the effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jobs will be created to benefit the U.S. workforce as Hanwha Philly commences its efforts to overhaul and modernize the shipyard, the company announced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are creating good manufacturing jobs, building the world\u2019s most advanced ships and fostering a new skilled workforce right here in America,\u201d Hanwha Vice Chairman Dong Kwan Kim said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hanwha.com\/newsroom\/news\/press-releases\/hanwha-announces-5-billion-philly-shipyard-investment-as-part-of-south-koreas-commitment-to-us-shipbuilding-growth.do\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hanwha.com\/newsroom\/news\/press-releases\/hanwha-announces-5-billion-philly-shipyard-investment-as-part-of-south-koreas-commitment-to-us-shipbuilding-growth.do\">per a release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is just the beginning.
