The United States and Ukraine hailed constructive talks in Geneva on Sunday, which yielded an \u201cupdated and refined\u201d framework to potentially bring the war with Russia to an end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two countries said the discussions were \u201chighly productive\u201d and reaffirmed that any future agreement \u201cmust fully uphold Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace,\u201d according to a joint statement<\/a> released after the meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now nearly four years into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, President Donald Trump continues to put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept his administration\u2019s peace proposal, a 28-point plan, by Thanksgiving. The president recently stated that Zelenskyy can \u201ccontinue to fight his little heart out<\/a>\u201d if terms are not reached. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainians and their Western allies criticized the initial draft of the peace plan as a \u201ccapitulation\u201d that essentially rewards the aggressor. A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers also voiced concerns that it acceded to Kremlin demands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the White House on Sunday said the Ukrainians believe the updated version \u201creflects their national interests\u201d and key concerns were \u201cthoroughly addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Ukrainian delegation affirmed that all of their principal concerns \u2013 security guarantees, long-term economic development, infrastructure protection, freedom of navigation, and political sovereignty \u2013 were thoroughly addressed during the meeting,\u201d the White House said in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUkrainian representatives stated that, based on the revisions and clarifications presented today, they believe the current draft reflects their national interests and provides credible and enforceable mechanisms to safeguard Ukraine\u2019s security in both the near and long term,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump, for his part, revealed Monday morning that \u201csomething good\u201d might be happening in the peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine???\u201d the president wrote<\/a> on Truth Social. \u201cDon\u2019t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the U.S. delegation, told reporters<\/a> the talks in Geneva were \u201cprobably the most productive and meaningful meetings so far in this entire process since we\u2019ve been involved.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top U.S. diplomat acknowledged there are still a couple of issues to iron out, but \u201cthe items that remain open are not insurmountable.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rubio did not specify what outstanding issues remain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel very optimistic that we\u2019re going to get there in a very reasonable period of time, very soon,\u201d he noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy\u2019s chief of staff, agreed with Rubio\u2019s evaluation of the meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have very good progress and we are moving forward to the just and lasting peace,\u201d Yermak said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final document will need to be signed off by Trump and Zelenskyy. Questioned about what happens after that, Rubio said the draft then heads to the Russians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s another part of this equation,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cThey have to agree to this in order for it to work.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the high-stakes meeting advanced in Geneva, Russian drones wreaked havoc on Ukraine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kremlin launched a \u201cmassive\u201d drone attack on Kharkiv on Sunday, killing four people and injuring at least 17 more, including two children, the mayor, Ihor Terekhov, announced on Telegram<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the battlefield, an \u201chonest U.S. military assessment\u201d points to Ukraine being in a \u201cvery bad position,\u201d Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told a cadre of European ambassadors<\/a> during a visit to Kyiv last week. \u201cNow is the time for peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. recently approved a potential sale of Patriot air defense systems worth $105 million<\/a> to Ukraine to meet \u201ccurrent and future threats.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
