Daryl Caudle<\/a> said in Japan, part of his 10-day tour of the Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China on Nov. 7 commissioned its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/11\/07\/beijing-commissions-third-aircraft-carrier-first-one-made-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/11\/07\/beijing-commissions-third-aircraft-carrier-first-one-made-in-china\/\">aircraft carrier, Fujian<\/a>, and began sea trials of its most advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/11\/14\/china-starts-sea-trials-of-amphibious-assault-ship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/11\/14\/china-starts-sea-trials-of-amphibious-assault-ship\/\">amphibious assault ship<\/a> last week. China\u2019s navy already has more ships than the U.S. Navy, but it has fewer aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships and other key vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe watch that very closely and see what they\u2019re going to do there,\u201d Caudle said of the amphibious assault ship. \u201cThat\u2019s a large ship, very capable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he added: \u201cWhen you\u2019ve got a lot of friends and allies, we have a pretty large, combined force ourselves,\u201d noting the capability of Japan, South Korea, Australia and other partners in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His visit to Tokyo comes as Japan\u2019s conservative new prime minister has <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-china-taiwan-emergency-takaichi-0cefc2b4e4f1cda16a4c8bfef033be2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-china-taiwan-emergency-takaichi-0cefc2b4e4f1cda16a4c8bfef033be2d\">stirred tensions with China<\/a> by suggesting a Chinese move against Taiwan could prompt a Japanese military response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier Monday, Caudle visited the U.S. Navy base of Yokosuka and a local shipbuilding facility. \u201cWhat we are willing to do with Japan and South Korea is to bolster U.S. shipbuilding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also called a plan for South Korea under a recent agreement with the U.S. to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/naval\/2025\/10\/29\/us-will-share-tech-to-let-south-korea-build-nuclear-submarine-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/naval\/2025\/10\/29\/us-will-share-tech-to-let-south-korea-build-nuclear-submarine-trump\/\">a nuclear-powered submarine<\/a> \u201cvery nascent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan has also expressed interest in developing a nuclear-powered submarine, though that may face public resistance in a country that suffered atomic bombings and has non-nuclear principles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adm.
