The Commerce Department has hired Jeffrey Chen as chief data scientist, making him the first person to hold that title at Commerce. Chen’s hire is part of the launch of the Commerce Data Service.
“The addition of Jeff to the team will help supercharge our data projects that will fundamentally change the way people and businesses interact with the department and its bureaus using the power of data science,” wrote Tyrone Grandison, deputy chief data officer at Commerce, in a Nov. 17 blog post.
Chen will specialize in experimental data science and product development to support the strategic goals of the CDS, Grandison wrote.
Chen comes to Commerce after stints at NASA, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the New York City Fire Department.
