{"id":10958,"date":"2018-10-17T20:55:30","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T20:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/17\/twitter-airs-election-meddling-data\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:17:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:17:43","slug":"twitter-airs-election-meddling-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/home\/2018\/10\/17\/twitter-airs-election-meddling-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter airs election meddling data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEW YORK \u2014 Twitter is releasing all known accounts and posts related to \u201cinformation operations\u201d dating back to 2016, when it was first learned that foreign operators were using social media to meddle in U.S. elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twitter has already disclosed the account numbers, but is now releasing the actual tweets, images, video and other information so that outside researchers can study them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company said Wednesday that the data comprises more than 4,600 accounts and over 10 million tweets, most affiliated with the Russia-linked Internet Research Agency and potentially linked to Iran. Twitter says the earliest activity it found on its service from these accounts dates back to 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Internet Research Agency, essentially a Russian troll farm, has been indicted by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller for its actions during the U.S. presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facebook and other social media companies are attempting to halt election meddling and misinformation campaigns on their platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the organized campaigns continue to evolve. They are no longer focused solely on elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operators linked to Russia, Iran and likely other nations have posted images, videos and other content that is intended to intensify political discord by promoting extreme views from multiple political angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is clear that information operations and coordinated inauthentic behavior will not cease,&#8221; Twitter said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/official\/en_us\/topics\/company\/2018\/enabling-further-research-of-information-operations-on-twitter.html\">blog post<\/a> Wednesday. &#8220;These types of tactics have been around for far longer than Twitter has existed \u2014 they will adapt and change as the geopolitical terrain evolves worldwide and as new technologies emerge.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The datasets are available for download on Twitter&#8217;s &#8220;elections integrity&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/about.twitter.com\/en_us\/values\/elections-integrity.html\">page<\/a> . Twitter said it is releasing the data in the hopes that independent researchers will help dissect such information operations campaigns. The tweets and other content are no longer available on Twitter itself since Twitter has deleted the fake and malicious accounts it had found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples of tweets include those from the account @TEN_GOP, which parroted pretended Tennessee\u2019s Republican party, and posted a photo of FBI Director James Comey with the words \u201cresign
