Bryan, the DHS senior official performing the duties of under secretary for science and technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorking with algorithm developers to improve screening technologies directly serves S&amp;T\u2019s mission to deliver effective and innovative insight, methods and solutions for the critical needs of the homeland security enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Competitors were provided with 1,000 volunteered passenger images to train a threat-detection algorithm, which was then evaluated against a larger dataset of images.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/2017\/10\/19\/tsas-agile-modernization-plan-is-clunky-overbudget-and-behind-schedule\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635624635031803976-fed-tsa-checkpoint-1jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">TSA\u2019s agile modernization plan is clunky, overbudget and behind schedule<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The TSA had intended to incorporate agile software development, yet the agency failed to define key roles and responsibilities, implement automated capabilities and prioritize system requirements for the effective usage of agile, according to GAO.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Passenger Screening Algorithm Challenge was an innovative way to challenge a broad community to solve a difficult problem,\u201d said Dr. John Fortune, DHS S&amp;T apex screening at speed program manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBetter ATR algorithms directly contribute to the passenger experience, reducing the need for pat-downs and accelerating the screening process. Through the prize competition, we\u2019re getting better results than we ordinarily might see, by connecting with very smart people who have great ideas but might not typically be part of a government proposal process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge awarded cash prizes to the top eight entries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jeremy Walthers of Rockville, Maryland \u2014 created an array of deep-learning models to process screening images from multiple views ($500,000).<\/li><li>Sergei Fotin of Nashua, New Hampshire \u2014 fused 2-D and 3-D data sources to make object location predictions ($300,000).<\/li><li>David Odaibo and Thomas Anthony of Alabaster, Alabama \u2014 used specialized image-level annotations to train their two-stage identification models ($200,000).<\/li><li>Zach Teed of Hudson, Ohio \u2014 used a location-based model to define threats ($100,000).<\/li><li>Oleg Trott of SanDiego, California \u2014 fused 2-D and 3-D data sources with automated image augmentation to improve model accuracy ($100,000).<\/li><li>Halla Yang of Wilmette, Illinois, and Phillip Adkins of Chicago, Illinois \u2014 designed an approach that automatically segmented the image before running models trained on specific cropped images ($100,000).<\/li><li>Suchir Balaji of Sunnyvale, California \u2014 used synthetic data and cross-image analysis to produce more robust predictions ($100,000).<\/li><li>Michael Avendi of Irvine, California \u2014 used separately trained models and random image augmentation for best results ($100,000).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The TSA now plans to test the eight winning algorithms against additional datasets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope to continue to engage the combined expertise of our winners to improve the winning solutions and ultimately see them used in airport security checkpoints,\u201d said
