{"id":11417,"date":"2019-01-23T21:22:02","date_gmt":"2019-01-23T21:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/23\/new-session-means-more-turnover-for-house-veterans-affairs-committee\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:18:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:18:37","slug":"new-session-means-more-turnover-for-house-veterans-affairs-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2019\/01\/23\/new-session-means-more-turnover-for-house-veterans-affairs-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"New session means more turnover for House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee will start its work this session with more than half of its members new to the panel, a significant turnover that veterans advocates have said leaves them with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2018\/11\/08\/for-todays-va-its-the-best-of-times-and-the-worst-of-times\/\" target=_blank>plenty of education work<\/a> along with their lobbying goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But committee leaders are downplaying concerns about the numerous new faces, noting that the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/11\/21\/veterans-in-the-116th-congress-by-the-numbers\/\" target=_blank>veterans on the panel<\/a> will increase this year, featuring even more younger veterans than in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose new veterans are eager to get started,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/12\/31\/incoming-chairmans-top-goal-for-2019-building-up-va-not-outside-care-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Committee Chairman Mark Takano<\/a>, D-Calif. \u201cI\u2019m not worried. They\u2019re coming with a deep well of knowledge, the struggles they have had, and questions about things like the transition assistance program and getting care at the VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think a lot of them are bringing important personal experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/11\/21\/veterans-in-the-116th-congress-by-the-numbers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18319598170965.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans in the 116th Congress, by the numbers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">When the next Congress convenes in January, 95 veterans will be among those serving in the House and Senate.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Democratic side, only five of the 16 members served on the committee last session. Takano and fellow California Democrat Julia Brownley joined the panel in 2013 and are the only ones among that group to have served on there for more than one Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Republican side of the committee boasts slightly more veterans\u2019 policy experience, but will still welcome five new members among its 12-person contingent. Ranking member Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., and Florida Republican Gus Bilirakis have both served on the committee for the last 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all, 16 members of the 28-person panel will enter the first hearing without prior experience on the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s on par with past Congresses. Mark Takano says he wants to see more effort put into hiring VA staffers instead of focusing on sending veterans to private-sector doctors.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For comparison, the House Armed Services Committee saw one of its most tumultuous session turnovers this year: 16 members of the 62-person panel are new, a little less than one-third of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside studies have shown that the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee is among the toughest for members in terms of outside fundraising, but problems with the Department of Veterans Affairs in recent years have also given its members a sizable national platform for their legislation and veterans policy priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roe said the new members will have to quickly learn about the complexities of the VA bureaucracy, benefits offerings and health care system.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/20\/new-house-armed-services-committee-sees-an-influx-of-veterans-women\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1067494580.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New House Armed Services committee sees an influx of veterans, women<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The committee will have 18 new members this year, a significant turnover in who is crafting the nation&#039;s military policy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a real learning curve,\u201d said Roe, who served as the committee chairman last session. \u201cBut we still have enough senior people on here to help. And there is so much vets work for all (congressional) offices that a lot of other members also pay close attention, even if they\u2019re not on the committee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve members of the committee, including Roe, served in the military. Four served in the recent wars overseas: Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., served in Iraq, while Reps.
