Mattis was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/12\/23\/trump-fires-mattis-early-shanahan-to-take-over-jan-1\/\" target=_blank>forced out of his military leadership role on Jan. 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis views on what we should be doing around the world would be invaluable for members of our committee,\u201d Smith said. \u201cSo we&#8217;d love to get his perspective on a wide variety of issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/12\/24\/new-hasc-chairmans-tough-sell-more-defense-spending-isnt-always-better\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18065618054061.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New HASC chairman\u2019s tough sell: More defense spending isn\u2019t always better<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">House Democrats&#039; top voice on defense issues says planners need to think differently about how to approach the hundreds of billions spent each year on national security.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new committee chairman said he would not interrogate Mattis on \u201cwhat did the president say about this, what did he do about that.\u201d But he said the former Marine Corps general \u201cis one of the most knowledgeable, capable experts we have on defense policy and foreign policy,\u201d making him a potentially valuable resource for the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether Mattis will be a willing witness on Capitol Hill remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Dec. 20, Mattis announced plans to step away from Trump\u2019s administration so that the president could find \u201ca secretary of defense whose views are better aligned with yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his resignation letter, Matts wrote that he believes America \u201cmust be resolute and unambiguous in our approach to those countries whose strategic interests are increasingly in tension with ours.\u201d That includes \u201ctreating allies with respect\u201d and doing \u201ceverything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also specifically mentioned both the Defeat-ISIS coalition of 74 nations and NATO as \u201cproof\u201d alliances that have benefited America. His resignation came just days after news broke that Trump wanted to withdraw all U.S. forces from Syria, saying that Islamic State fighters in the region had been defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump initially called Mattis\u2019 departure a \u201cretirement\u201d but then forced the defense secretary out two months earlier than Mattis had planned, installing Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan as the acting official in his place. The U.S. is not able to do everything on our own.
