That\u2019ll be $24 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=a9acc15c-e595-473e-8897-72a6625989f5\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-a9acc15c-e595-473e-8897-72a6625989f5.png\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Air Force is spending nearly $24 million to upgrade the refrigerators on Air Force One.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is spending nearly $24 million to upgrade its Air Force One refrigerators for the first time since 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, Boeing was awarded a contract worth $23,657,671 for \u201cengineering support services\u201d for two chillers onboard Air Force One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost includes prototype design, manufacturing, procurement, installation and testing, according to the Defense Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Contracts\/Contract-View\/Article\/1403876\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">contract<\/a> states that the new chillers are expected to be completed and installed by October 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense One first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/business\/2018\/01\/air-force-one-needs-new-refrigerators-they-cost-24-million\/145457\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force One fleet consists of two heavily modified Boeing 747 aircraft, but it was unclear if each plane will be receiving a new chiller unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chiller units being replaced are the original commercial equipment delivered with the aircraft in 1990, Air Force spokeswoman Laura McAndrews told Air Force Times in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe units were based on the technology at the time and designed for short-term food storage,\u201d McAndrews said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though the chillers are serviced on a regular basis, they\u2019ve become less reliable, especially in hot or humid environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe units are unable to effectively support mission requirements for food storage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new units will provide nearly 70 cubic feet of temperature-controlled storage to support personnel onboard the aircraft for an extended period of time without having to be resupplied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This includes the ability to store about 3,000 meals in refrigerators and freezers below the passenger cabin, Defense One reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are five chillers and 26 climate-controlled compartments onboard Air Force One, according to the Air Force.
