{"id":12012,"date":"2020-03-10T20:54:45","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T20:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/10\/how-industry-and-government-can-partner-for-more-secure-systems\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:21:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:21:26","slug":"how-industry-and-government-can-partner-for-more-secure-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/2020\/03\/10\/how-industry-and-government-can-partner-for-more-secure-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"How industry and government can partner for more secure systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry needs to be able to tell government how software was developed and how security measures were integrated into it, a top official at the National Institute of Standards and Technology said March 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGive us some evidence that those security features are actually in place and doing what they\u2019re supposed to do,\u201d said Ron Ross, a fellow at NIST who leads a new DevSecOps project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ross, speaking at an Advanced Technology Academic Research Center event on DevOps, said that the future of U.S. national and economic security hinges on industry and government getting the transition to DevOps and DevSecOps, two different software development approaches where collaboration and security considered from the beginning, because they are critical to national and economic security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll the work that\u2019s going on now, whether it\u2019s experimental or whether it\u2019s becoming more mature, we need to be able to normalize this type of process so it becomes [something] people would just do routinely \u2014 it becomes institutionalized and operationalized across the entire federal government,\u201d Ross said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry, Ross said, is a critical partner in that process. The key is ensuring that customers no longer have to worry about the effectiveness and origin of security controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we can make this a win-win for industry, where they\u2019re producing stuff at their pace at the speed of commercial industry and we can get the security capabilities built in, as part of that agile process, now it\u2019s a win for them and it\u2019s a win for [government],\u201d Ross said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ross said while agencies sought to implement DevSecOps, they need to take a \u201cholistic view.\u201d That approach includes hardening the target, which could stop most cyberattacks, but also includes damage limitation and cyber resiliency. Damage limitation includes using virtualization of computers or zero-trust approach to protect networks. Creating cyber resiliency includes implementing policies inside the organization that are external to a system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we can do that and do it well, everybody\u2019s going to be better off,\u201d Ross said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have a safer, more secure country. We\u2019re going to have a leading technology force in the world. It\u2019s in our DNA to do this, we\u2019ve done this in the past and we can do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ross recently led NIST\u2019s information security project, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/civilian\/2020\/01\/21\/how-one-cyber-expert-is-influencing-day-to-day-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\">left that role in
