rest need to catch up"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">Four government agencies have accounted for a disproportionate amount of the cost savings from a strategic plan to consolidate and optimize data centers.<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">The Departments of Commerce, Defense, Homeland Security and Treasury accounted for approximately $2.0 billion (or 87 percent) of the $2.3 billion achieved since 2012 by 18 of the 24 agencies involved in the Office of Management and Budget\u2019s Data Center Optimization Initiative, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office.<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">In a similarly skewed statistic, The Departments of Agriculture, Defense, Interior and Treasury accounted for 84 percent of the 4,388 completed closures.<\/span><span class=\"inbox-inbox-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">Conversely, the remainder of the participating agencies reported less in planned cost savings and avoidances in their annual DCOI strategic plans or didn\u2019t submit a complete strategic plan at all.<\/span><span class=\"inbox-inbox-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">The end result of these inconsistencies is that savings estimated in fiscal years 2016 to 2018 amount to only $656.28 million of $4 billion in planned savings reported in November 2015 (a $3.3 billion difference).<\/span><span class=\"inbox-inbox-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">GAO identified weaknesses in OMB\u2019s oversight of agencies\u2019 savings information and strategic plans as a major cause for discrepancies, and recommended OMB improve. <\/span><span class=\"inbox-inbox-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">The report\u2019s recommendations also include many of the agencies\u2019 completing and reinforcing their strategic plans and reporting mechanisms to achieve data center cost savings consistency.<\/span><span class=\"inbox-inbox-apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">Twelve agencies agreed, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Housing and Urban Development disagreed, and 11 did not state whether they agreed or disagreed.<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span class=\"inbox-inbox-s1\">The entire report can <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/GAO-17-388\" target=\"_blank\">be downloaded on GAO.gov<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><br\/><br\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A review by the Government Accountability Office of agency data center closure plans and consolidation savings reports under the Office of Management and Budget\u2019s Data Center Optimization Initiative found the need for strategic plans completion and improved oversight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":37767,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-noindex":"","_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-nofollow":"","_yoast_wpseo_canonical":"","_acf":"","_yoast_wpseo_primary_category":14,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_smg_distribution_targets":[]},"categories":[63,15,14,9],"tags":[],"coauthors":[1269],"class_list":["post-12372","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cloud","category-management","category-it-networks","category-federal-oversight"],"acf":{"subheadline":"","legacy_arc_id":"CONW67C52BHSJMJYIINDJ6B5YU","arc_canonical_url":"\/it-networks\/2017\/06\/02\/gao-4-agencies-lead-data-center-consolidation-rest-need-to-catch-up\/","remove_feature_photo":false,"is_sponsored":false,"subtype":"","redirect_url":"","disable_inline_ads":false,"native_logo_pretext":"Presented By:"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.0 (Yoast SEO v28.1) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>GAO: 4 agencies lead data center consolidation;
