{"id":12686,"date":"2018-06-25T16:30:24","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T16:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/25\/how-telework-fuels-the-insider-threat\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:33:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:33:53","slug":"how-telework-fuels-the-insider-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/25\/how-telework-fuels-the-insider-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"How telework fuels the insider threat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An overwhelming majority of American business leaders believe that the risk of a data breach is higher when employees work remotely, a grave warning that comes on the heels of intelligence secrets being stolen from home computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a June 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shredit.com\/getmedia\/b5de58fd-7e17-4d18-b718-9eca8d0665a6\/Shred-it-2018-North-America-State-of-the-Industry.aspx?ext=.pdf\">study<\/a> by Shred-it, 86 percent of corporate executives and 60 percent of small business owners believe that the risk of a data breach increases when employees work out of the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEmployees working remotely can expose businesses to both physical and digital breaches, so it is important to have policies and safeguards in place,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report found that 69 percent of corporate executives and 71 percent of small business owners attribute data breaches to employees through accidental error and human loss. Business and government leaders have ramped up their focus on the \u201cinsider threat,\u201d or belief that employees are the biggest risk to a company\u2019s information security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2017, Russian hackers stole sensitive information from a National Security Agency contractor who stored the secrets on his home computer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/russian-hackers-stole-nsa-data-on-u-s-cyber-defense-1507222108\">according<\/a> to the Wall Street Journal. The hackers allegedly penetrated the contractor\u2019s computer through anti-virus software from Kaspersky Labs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> \u201cThere are several surveys that confirm that no matter how much an organization spends on technology, the single most important point of vulnerability in an organization remains its employees,\u201d said Imran Ahmad, a lawyer at Miller Thomson LLP, in the study. \u201cTo avoid issues, employers should consider what type of access each employee should have when working remotely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To bolster security while working remotely, the report suggested evaluating third-party access and limiting types of information that can be used out of the office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, it might not be enough. Companies and government agencies should assume that external networks contain hostile threats, <a href=\"https:\/\/nvlpubs.nist.gov\/nistpubs\/SpecialPublications\/NIST.SP.800-46r2.pdf\">according<\/a> to a report from the National Institute for Standards and Technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOrganizations should assume that telework client devices, which are used in a variety of external locations and are particularly prone to loss or theft, will be acquired by malicious parties who will either attempt to recover sensitive data from them or leverage the devices to gain access to the enterprise network,\u201d the NIST report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOptions for mitigating threats of loss or theft include encrypting the device\u2019s storage, encrypting all sensitive data stored on client devices, or not storing sensitive data on client devices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warnings come as more federal employees are teleworking. Telework participation increased to 51 percent of all eligible employees in 2016, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telework.gov\/reports-studies\/reports-to-congress\/2017-report-to-congress.pdf\">recent<\/a> government report (using the latest data
