{"id":12896,"date":"2016-10-07T16:00:02","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T16:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/10\/07\/internet-of-things-and-the-art-of-the-possible\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:38:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:38:29","slug":"internet-of-things-and-the-art-of-the-possible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/2016\/10\/07\/internet-of-things-and-the-art-of-the-possible\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet of things and the art of the possible"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the discussion around the internet of things (IoT) has focused on the possibility of interconnecting more types of common devices, ranging from automobiles to household appliances. However, that view limits the possibilities presented by IoT, not only for improving our everyday lives but also for improving government service.<br\/><br\/> IoT presents opportunities for us not only to further automate the activities we undertake already. The real opportunity comes when we use these methods to entirely change the way we work and do things we could not even imagine previously.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many examples where this is already happening. At the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/portal\/category\/100731\">General Services Administration<\/a>, the agency where I spent most of my career in government, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/on-it\/at-gsa-an-internet-of-things-experiment\/2014\/08\/30\/403c620c-2e10-11e4-994d-202962a9150c_story.html\">Public Building Service<\/a>is using IoT to make heating and air conditioning in government buildings more efficient, cutting consumption and costs. Sensors installed throughout buildings can monitor temperatures and trigger alerts to HVAC systems when temperatures run too cold or hot. Sensors also can detect traffic patterns to increase or decrease temperatures based on room occupancy. They are also experimenting with IoT on those buildings\u2019 doors and portals, to create safer and more secure workplaces for government employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Government at all levels are investigating the potential of IoT as a way to address the urgent need to upgrade our <a href=\"http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/blog\/how-iot-can-help-monitor-and-rebuild-aging-infrastructure\">aging infrastructure<\/a>. By placing sensors on bridges, railroad lines, highways, we can monitor their stability and safety. Likewise, we\u2019re seeing government projects to connect shipping containers to the IoT, to ensure the safety and quality of cargo shipments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is just the tip of the iceberg. We can envision a pervasive network of sensors, constantly pulling in data that can be used to predict trends and foresee problems. The key will be the successful implementation of advanced data analytics or big data techniques, which may represent a key hurdle for the government. A 2015 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unisys.com\/offerings\/industry-solutions\/public-sector-industry-solutions\/news%20release\/us-government-agencies-report-progress-in-move-to-digital-gov\">study<\/a>by Unisys of federal government executives showed broad interest and support for advanced data analytics initiatives, but 88 percent of those surveyed expressed some level of concern about in-house expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while IoT presents incredible possibilities for securing infrastructure, buildings and cargo, perhaps ironically security remains a concern for IoT implementations for the simple reason that more interconnected devices means a broader target for adversaries. And unlike devices installed inside the walls of a data center, IoT devices may be subject to harsh conditions and other physical threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Government agencies considering IoT should take the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gartnergroup\/2014\/09\/25\/securing-the-internet-of-things\/#11e9db041eb0\">security threats<\/a>\u2013 both cyber and physical \u2013 seriously. However, the benefits of IoT will in most cases outweigh the risks. Agencies should not let those threats dissuade them from moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agencies can assume that with millions and millions of more IoT devices coming online, hackers and other unauthorized bad actors will inevitably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/hackers-infect-army-of-cameras-dvrs-for-massive-internet-attacks-1475179428?mod=LS1&amp;utm_source=Triggermail&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Post%20Blast%20%28bii-iot%29:%20Waze%20expands%20to%20the%20Bay%20Area%20%E2%80%94%20IoT%20security%20on%20display%20after%20massive%20hack%20%E2%80%94%20Volvo%27s%20self-driving%20car%20plans&amp;utm_term=BII%20List%20IoT%20ALL\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/hackers-infect-army-of-cameras-dvrs-for-massive-internet-attacks-1475179428?mod=LS1&amp;utm_source=Triggermail&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Post%20Blast%20%28bii-iot%29:%20Waze%20expands%20to%20the%20Bay%20Area%20%E2%80%94%20IoT%20security%20on%20display%20after%20massive%20hack%20%E2%80%94%20Volvo%27s%20self-driving%20car%20plans&amp;utm_term=BII%20List%20IoT%20ALL\">infiltrate<\/a>their IoT network and take the appropriate security precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a new approach to security known as micro-segmentation will be essential in the era of IoT. This approach assumes that at some point, someone somewhere will break into the IoT network without authorization. But by establishing a segmented infrastructure, we can ensure that damage can be inflicted only within the segment of the network that was infiltrated and that bad actors cannot move laterally across the network to other parts of the organization \u2013 or even see that those other endpoints exist. Agencies can make segments as small or large as needed and adjust the communities of interest on the fly so that only those authorized to access a device can do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IoT represents endless possibilities to make government more efficient and to make the world safer. We are now dealing with the art of the possible when it comes to IoT. Agencies should use creativity and imagination to take advantage of the promise IoT holds \u2013 but proceed with caution and intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Casey Coleman is group vice president for civilian agencies at Unisys Federal.
