Bob Casey and 10 of Pennsylvania\u2019s members of Congress on Tuesday asked President Donald Trump\u2019s postmaster general to immediately return sorting machines that were removed as union officials say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/federal-oversight\/congress\/2020\/08\/18\/post-office-machine-removals-spark-election-concerns-suit\/\" target=_blank>the machines\u2019 removal<\/a> has contributed to a slowdown in mail delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy was signed by the Democratic senator from Pennsylvania, all nine Pennsylvania Democrats in the U.S. House and one of its nine Republicans, U.S. Rep. The order to remove them was given before DeJoy \u2014 a former supply-chain CEO who is a major donor to Trump and the Republican Party \u2014 took over the post in June, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The machines, the spokesperson said, were not needed, a contention disputed by two postal worker union officials in Pennsylvania, who said Tuesday the removal of the machines was extraordinarily unusual and continues to contribute to the slowdown in mail delivery around the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partisan fight over the Postal Service is casting a shadow over the coming presidential election, with millions in Pennsylvania expected to vote by mail amid the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has baselessly claimed that mail-in voting will lead to fraud and acknowledged that he is withholding emergency aid from the postal service to make it harder to process an expected surge of mail-in ballots, which he worries could cost him the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2020\/08\/24\/dejoy-tells-lawmakers-that-trump-attacks-on-mail-in-ballots-not-helpful\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20237541597308.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DeJoy tells lawmakers that Trump attacks on mail-in ballots \u2018not helpful\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Testifying on Capitol Hill, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy denied that recent changes at the Postal Service are linked to the November elections.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In testimony during a six-hour House Oversight Committee hearing last week, DeJoy vehemently refused to restore decommissioned mail-sorting machines and blue collection boxes, saying they are not needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy also said he would continue policies limiting when mail can go out, as well as halting late delivery trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy, however, insisted he is not trying to sabotage the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If every American voted by mail this year, that volume would be three-quarters of what the Postal Service delivers in one day, or 330 million ballots compared to 433 million pieces of mail in a regular day, the Postal Service said. Smith\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Casey and the other lawmakers say at least 30 letter-sorting machines have been removed from Pennsylvania mail facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dozens of the machines remain, but machines are never simply just removed, union officials said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, machines are removed and replaced with an updated machine, and sometimes a machine is loaned out to another distribution center that needs it, they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut to remove three machines that we need doesn\u2019t make sense at this time when you\u2019re going into your heaviest time of the year,\u201d said Kim Miller, president of the Philadelphia-area local of the American Postal Workers Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller\u2019s area lost three letter-sorting machines and has 30 to 35 left, she said. Caselli said his distribution center lost eight letter-sorting machines and is left with 35 to 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Postal Service\u2019s warning that it\u2019s delivery times \u201cappear to be incompatible\u201d with Pennsylvania\u2019s mail-in ballot deadlines has invigorated a partisan fight over changing those deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gov. Tom Wolf\u2019s administration, along with his Democratic allies, is asking the state Supreme Court to require counties to count ballots that arrive up to three days after the Nov. 3 election, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day. The current deadline is the close of polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans oppose that and, to minimize late-arriving ballots, are seeking to shorten the deadline to request a mail-in ballot, from one week to 15 days before the election.
