Another grant for $22.5 million was awarded to a group led by the University of Illinois, which will contribute an additional $5.6 million to the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i><b>CYBERCON 2015: <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/cybercon.federaltimes.com\/\" title=\"http:\/\/cybercon.federaltimes.com\/\">Sign up now for CyberCon 2015 to learn how best to protect your agency&#8217;s networks<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two research teams will look at potential vulnerabilities in the nation&#8217;s power grid and develop cybersecurity tools to prevent intrusions and mitigate the impact of a successful attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent investigation by <i>USA Today<\/i> showed Energy Department networks were attacked more than 1,100 times over the last four years. Of the 159 successful breaches, at least 53 gave the attackers root access to the department&#8217;s systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teams will also develop means of ensuring power delivery continues unabated in the event of a breach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The challenge is that increased efficiencies and capabilities in energy delivery rely on greater use of computers and communication networks, which simultaneously raises the potential for serious problems,&#8221; said David Nicol, director of UI&#8217;s Information Trust Institute and principal investigator for the Cyber Resilient Energy Delivery Consortium (CREDC). &#8220;We need to be able to integrate advanced cyber components with the assurance that we aren&#8217;t making systems more vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UA team, for instance, will be testing its new security tools at the 17 electric distributors managed by the Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation (AECC), the industry partner working under the grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Cybersecurity threats are one of largest, most complicated issues that power providers face and will continue to face in the future,&#8221; said Robert McClanahan, vice president of information technology for AECC. &#8220;We look forward to exchanging real-world experience and knowledge with our academic partners.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UI team consists of members of CREDC, including Argonne National Laboratory, Arizona State University, Dartmouth College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Rutgers University, Tennessee State University, the University of Houston and Washington State University.
