touts push for better EHR sharing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water crisis in Flint, Michigan, has exposed government breakdowns resulting from a health care calamity, but it also effectively demonstrated the field&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell, speaking at the 2016 HIMSS Conference &#038; Exhibition in Las Vegas, explained how Michigan pediatrician Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha discovered the lead poisoning crisis by utilizing patient data stored electronically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;She began mining electronic health records to compare blood tests and results from more than 700 children in that area,&#8221; Burwell said. &#8220;By comparing those records to children outside of her area, she quickly discovered that the percentage of children with lead poisoning had doubled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;She said, &#8216;If we were still on paper, it would have taken forever to get these results.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anecdote illustrates how the growing push toward electronic health records and data sharing can dramatically impact medical care for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It allows us to see the connections in our communities and helps us put patients at the center of their care,&#8221; Burwell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while Burwell may have been speaking to the choir about the benefits of sharing electronic patient data \u2014\u00a0in this case, more than 40,000 health and IT professionals gathered for the preeminent health IT conference\u00a0\u2014\u00a0she also highlighted her agency&#8217;s push to broaden the technological benefits of bringing health care to the cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a number of roadblocks remain, namely ensuring that the data that needs to be shared isn&#8217;t tangled in a morass of regulations and misapplied privacy protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To aid promoting better data sharing, Burwell said HHS has advanced policy to publish application program interfaces &#8220;to support the development of apps that are agnostic to the electronic health record underneath,&#8221; as well as establishing interoperability guidance and partnering with the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Sometimes the most important part of our job is to step back and let others take the lead,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s why today, I am very excited to announce that companies provide over 90 percent of electronic health records used by U.S. hospitals have stepped up and made public commitments to make data work better for consumers and providers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The secretary added that stakeholders, along with the nation&#8217;s five largest health care systems, have pledged to help bolster data sharing by making it easier for consumers to obtain their data, to use standardized APIs to broaden the health app market and to not block health information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To illustrate the industry&#8217;s commitment, Burwell cited the <a href=\"http:\/\/medicalinteroperability.org\/\">Center for Medical Interoperability<\/a>, a nonprofit created by health care providers to promote information-sharing technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, the secretary said it would take cooperation from stakeholders, the industry and government to ensure that electronic healthcare succeeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This transformation is about building a system that puts the patient&#8217;s health first, that helps them lead better lives,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Thanks to you and all the work you do every day, we are getting closer to our mission of a better, smarter, healthier
