As a result, thousands of national guardsmen were ordered into D.C. Meanwhile, lawmakers are calling for President Donald Trump to be impeached or removed from office under the 25th Amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of these actions have ramifications for the national security community. Here are the key events Defense News is tracking. <i>This list, with the newest items up top, will be updated as events require. The most recent update was at 10:05 p.m. ET on Jan. 7.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Thursday, Jan. 7<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>&#8211; 10:05 p.m.: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/01\/08\/a-top-trump-adviser-on-the-middle-east-to-step-down-following-riot\/\" target=_blank>Rob Greenway, a top adviser to President Donald Trump on the Middle East<\/a>, is expected to step down Thursday as part of an exodus at the National Security Council following Wednesday\u2019s storming of Capitol Hill by Trump supporters, an official with knowledge of the situation told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all, Greenway\u2019s departure means at least six staffers at the National Security Council will have resigned since Wednesday. They include the senior director for Africa, Erin Walsh; the head of the NSC\u2019s bureau tracking weapons of mass destruction, Anthony Ruggiero; the top Europe and Russia advisor, Ryan Tully; Mark Vandroff, the NSC\u2019s senior director for defense policy and Matt Pottinger, the deputy national security adviser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>&#8211; 4:15 p.m.: <\/b>President-elect Joe Biden is pressuring Congress to quickly confirm his nominees for national security roles, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/01\/07\/joe-biden-wont-have-his-defense-secretary-in-place-on-day-one\/\" target=_blank>emerged that the congressional calendar won\u2019t permit his pick for defense secretary<\/a>, Lloyd Austin, to be in place on Inauguration Day. Lloyd would need a waiver for the job because he recently retired from the military as a general. It\u2019s unclear who would immediately fill the role, and the incoming administration hasn\u2019t announced its plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Senate Armed Services Committee has announced a Jan. 19, 3 p.m. confirmation hearing for Austin, which will start the formal process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>&#8211; 3:59 p.m.: <\/b>Boeing is circulating a statement from CEO Dave Calhoun on the presidential transition, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonostrower\/status\/1347285068469784576?s=20\" target=_blank>reported Jon Ostrower,<\/a> the editor of The Air Current.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoeing proudly serves a vital role with our U,S. government customer in defending democracy here and around the world,\u201d Calhoun stated. \u201cThe vote of the people and the peaceful transition of government are core to our democracy. Our company has a long history of working with elected officials over many years. In the spirit of bipartisanship, we encourage them to work with President elect Biden to unify our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <b>3:54 p.m.:<\/b> Energy secretary Dan Brouillette condemned \u201cpolitically-motivated violence,\u201d but said he will not be leaving office before Jan 20., according to a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NatashaBertrand\/status\/1347285614492864515\" target=_blank>obtained by Politico<\/a>. As energy secretary, Brouillette has oversight of the National Nuclear Security Administration, which manages America\u2019s nuclear warheads; the NNSA has been under acting leadership since agency head <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2020\/11\/06\/head-of-nuclear-weapons-agency-unexpectedly-resigns\/\" target=_blank>Lisa Gordon-Hagerty resigned<\/a> after clashing with Brouillette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>&#8211; 3:11 p.m.: <\/b>In a statement released by the Pentagon, acting defense secretary Chris Miller called yesterday\u2019s violence \u201creprehensible and contrary to the tenets of the United States Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the midst of this tragedy, I was proud of the professionalism of our Department of Defense personnel. I want to specifically recognize the service of the District of Columbia National Guard. They performed with honor, integrity, and alacrity to protect people and property from unlawful acts,\u201d Miller wrote. \u201cI strongly condemn these acts of violence against our democracy. I, and the people I lead in the Department of Defense, continue to perform our duties in accordance with our oath of office, and will execute the time-honored peaceful transition of power to President-elect Biden on January 20.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>&#8211; 3:10 p.m.: <\/b>Defense News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/01\/07\/another-senior-trump-national-security-aide-resigns-in-the-wake-of-capitol-riot\/?utm_campaign=Socialflow+DFN&#038;utm_source=twitter.com&#038;utm_medium=social\" target=_blank>has learned<\/a> that Mark Vandroff, senior director for defense policy at the National Security Council and a retired Navy captain, has resigned. In his resignation letter, Vandroff did not specifically say why he was resigning, and the official declined to comment to reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>&#8211; 3:05 p.m.: <\/b>Trump\u2019s former National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LTGHRMcMaster\/status\/1347273185641734144\" target=_blank>tweeted <\/a>that \u201cPresident Trump and other officials have repeatedly compromised our principles in pursuit of partisan advantage and personal gain.\u201d McMaster, a retired Army general officer who worked for Trump for roughly a year, added that \u201cThose who engaged in disinformation and demagoguery in pursuit of self-interest abdicated their responsibility to the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <b>2:48 p.m.:<\/b> Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) president and CEO Eric Fanning issued a statement the reads, in part, \u201cWe condemn\u2014in the strongest terms\u2014yesterday\u2019s violence and those who incite such violence. Ensuring the peaceful transition of power is a hallmark of our democracy. We must remain committed to this as a nation.\u201d AIA is one of the largest defense trade associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <b>2:09 p.m.:<\/b> Top Democrats in the House and Senate have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/01\/07\/pelosi-democrats-call-for-trumps-removal-after-riot\/\" target=_blank>joined a growing call<\/a> for President Donald Trump to be removed from office \u2014 by either his Cabinet invoking the 25th Amendment or Congress impeaching him. The list so far includes incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith, D-Wash., with Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., as the lone Republican so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JenniferJJacobs\/status\/1347086511267864578\" target=_blank>Bloomberg reported<\/a> that national security adviser Robert O\u2019Brien plans to stay through the end of the administration. There had been numerous reports Wednesday evening that O\u2019Brien, who has held that position since September 2019, was considering resigning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; National Defense Industries Association head <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2020\/02\/05\/does-the-defense-industrial-base-deserve-a-passing-grade\/\" target=_blank>Hawk Carlisle<\/a> issued a statement that the \u201cdespicable acts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/federal-oversight\/congress\/2021\/01\/06\/protesters-are-in-the-building-us-capitol-under-siege\/\" target=_blank>yesterday\u2019s mob<\/a>, egged on by irresponsible rhetoric, is anathema to those values and the foundational document that has made America the shining city on the hill that has beckoned millions to a better way of life.\u201d Carlisle, a retired U.S. Air Force general, added that \u201cAmerica and Americans are better than this. NDIA and its members are dedicated to being part of the solution while continuing to be at the heart of the defense of this great nation, its people and the values we hold dear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; The deputy assistant secretary of commerce for intelligence and security, John Costello, who is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2020\/10\/19\/cyber-solarium-commission-outlines-recommendations-for-strengthening-the-supply-chain\/\" target=_blank>Cyberspace Solarium Commission<\/a>, announced his resignation. Costello worked on cybersecurity issues and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CostelloJK\/status\/1347198645381292034\" target=_blank>stated<\/a> that President Donald Trump \u201cincited\u201d the \u201cviolent sedition\u201d against Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Gen. Stephen Townsend, the head of U.S. Africa Command, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USAfricaCommand\/status\/1347184662221828097\" target=_blank>issued a message<\/a>, apparently aimed at forces in the command, that \u201cAmerica has withstood much greater and graver challenges in the past\u201d and that the American people expect the command to \u201cstay steady\u201d on its mission. It is unusual for a combatant command to issue a statement on domestic political issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClintHinote\/status\/1347254207888420864\" target=_blank>Twitter thread<\/a>, Lt. Gen. Clint Hinote, the head of the Air Force\u2019s strategy office, stated that \u201cTo be clear: It is my personal opinion that we are in danger of losing our republic. Real danger.\u201d He also stated that \u201cAs bad as 9\/11 was, I feel that our situation today is worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Wednesday, Jan. 6<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; The majority of House Republicans still chose to reject electoral votes from Arizona and Pennsylvania, including incoming House Armed Services Committee ranking member Mike Rogers, R-Ala., who had previously condemned the violence at the capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nam.org\/manufacturers-call-on-armed-thugs-to-cease-violence-at-capitol-11628\/\" target=_blank>astounding statement<\/a> from an industry group, the head of the National Association of Manufacturers called for Vice President Mike Pence to \u201cseriously consider working with the Cabinet to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2021\/01\/07\/military-officers-congress-join-call-invoke-25th-amendment-remove-trump.html\" target=_blank>invoke the 25th Amendment<\/a>\u201d and remove Trump from power. The association, which represents more than 14,000 companies around the country, previously worked with President Donald Trump on a number of industrial issues. Among its board members are representatives from Raytheon, Boeing, Textron Aviation and the Ball Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger resigned Wednesday evening, per multiple reports. A former journalist and China expert, Pottinger served on the National Security Council for the entirety of President Donald Trump\u2019s term, and was viewed in national security circles as a rational actor who worked to keep the interagency process working. In <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robertcobrien\/status\/1347227649589080069\" target=_blank>a tweet<\/a>, national security adviser Robert O\u2019Brien praised Pottinger as having served \u201cwith distinction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Former Defense Secretaries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/01\/07\/former-defense-secretaries-mattis-esper-decry-attack-on-the-capitol-and-trumps-rhetoric\/\" target=_blank>Jim Mattis and Mark Esper condemned<\/a> both Wednesday\u2019s attack on the Capitol building by rioters and President Donald Trump for his role in the violence. \u201cToday\u2019s violent assault on our Capitol, an effort to subjugate American democracy by mob rule, was fomented by Mr. Trump,\u201d Mattis said in a statement. Esper, who replaced Mattis and was also fired by Trump, called the attack on the Capitol \u201cappalling and un-American.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Georgians elected Jon Ossoff to the U.S. Senate, giving the Democratic Party control of Congress and the White House for the first time in a decade. Sen.
