{"id":14235,"date":"2022-06-27T21:31:11","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T21:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/27\/lockheeds-sikorsky-wins-23-billion-army-black-hawk-multi-year-contract\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:56:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:56:14","slug":"lockheeds-sikorsky-wins-23-billion-army-black-hawk-multi-year-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/govcon\/contracting\/2022\/06\/27\/lockheeds-sikorsky-wins-23-billion-army-black-hawk-multi-year-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed\u2019s Sikorsky wins $2.3 billion Army Black Hawk multi-year contract"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>UPDATE <\/i>\u2014 <i>This story was updated to include additional information from the Army on savings expected as the result of the multi-year deal.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Lockheed Martin\u2019s Sikorsky unit won its 10th five-year contract worth $2.3 billion for 120 H-60 Mike-model Black Hawk utility helicopters with options for an additional 135 aircraft for both the Army and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/nato-priorities\/2021\/06\/14\/nato-helicopter-program-could-be-next-battleground-between-us-european-defense-industries\/\" target=\"_blank\">other customers through Foreign Military Sales<\/a>, the Pentagon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should all options be exercised, the contract could be worth a total of $4.4 billion, the Army said in a June 27 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army told Defense News in a June 28 statement that it expects to save roughly $387 million \u2014 which equates to 14.5% \u2014 for the base quantity, when compared to total anticipated costs of carrying out the program through annual contracts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deliveries under the contract are set to begin in July and continue through 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis Multi-Year agreement allows the Army to meet current and future capability needs through upgrades, remanufacturing, replacement, and technology insertions,\u201d said Col. Calvin Lane, the Army\u2019s utility helicopters project manager, in the statement. \u201cThe efficiencies of this contract make the best use of limited resources and result in direct savings to the Army and to taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army and Sikorsky did not disclose how much savings would be generated through the five-year deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army is gearing up to award a contract to either Bell or a Sikorsky-Boeing team to build the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/04\/04\/us-army-plans-to-field-a-future-long-range-assault-helicopter-by-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft <\/a>intended to replace the Black Hawk, the service has said the UH-60 will remain in the force for years to come and will be phased out slowly over time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/03\/31\/us-army-faces-key-decisions-to-advance-future-vertical-lift-aircraft-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">as FLRAA comes online in the 2030s<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mike-model Black Hawks were first fielded in 2007. The Alpha-model was fielded in 1978. The M-model is the latest variant of the helicopter and provides additional capabilities such as increased situational awareness and more payload capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black Hawks are set to receive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/10\/11\/covid-snags-armys-race-to-fly-future-helicopter-with-next-gen-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army\u2019s Improved Turbine Engine Program engine<\/a> developed by General Electric Aviation as one upgrade that will keep the Army\u2019s work horse flying for several more decades. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2022\/03\/24\/next-gen-engine-for-current-and-future-helicopter-fleets-begins-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\">first engine is in government testing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDecades of Black Hawk production and enhancements, strong program execution and close partnership with the Army has kept the program thriving, and this contract is a testament to that success,\u201d Nathalie Previte, vice president of Sikorsky\u2019s Army and Air Force programs, said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAdditionally, we continue to see strong international interest in the Black Hawk due to its versatility and proven record of providing unwavering support to the U.S. and nations around the globe,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sikorsky is investing in the Black Hawk platform \u201cfrom sustainment to digital transformation and modernization in order to provide our customers with the competitive edge they require,\u201d Previte said. \u201cWe have aligned our investments with the Army\u2019s technology roadmap, while leveraging<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/10\/06\/report-us-army-can-field-two-new-vertical-lift-aircraft-if-service-lives-within-its-means\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Future Vertical Lift <\/a>technologies to ensure the Black Hawk will be a key player in the Joint All-Domain Operations environment and FVL ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also nearing an agreement with Boeing on its second <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/03\/23\/boeing-us-army-make-multibillion-multiyear-ah-64e-deal-official\/\" target=\"_blank\">multiyear contract <\/a>for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/06\/23\/lawmakers-say-the-us-army-lacks-a-plan-to-modernize-its-apache-helo\/\"
