{"id":14744,"date":"2020-05-27T18:09:07","date_gmt":"2020-05-27T18:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/27\/nih-wants-digital-health-technologies-to-contain-coronavirus\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:31:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:31:40","slug":"nih-wants-digital-health-technologies-to-contain-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/health-it\/2020\/05\/27\/nih-wants-digital-health-technologies-to-contain-coronavirus\/","title":{"rendered":"NIH wants digital health technologies to contain coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Institutes of Health wants to hear from industry about digital health technologies that could help contain the spread of COVID-19, the disease cause by the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The May 26 <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/opp\/ab06089f08d14368ae24e0ad57410cb0\/view?keywords=digital%20health%20solutions&#038;sort=-relevance&#038;index=opp&#038;is_active=true&#038;page=1\" target=_blank>request for information<\/a> from NIH\u2019s National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and the National Cancer Institute comes as states and cities across the country are in various stages of phased reopening. At the same time, President Donald Trump has been calling on states to reopen as quickly as possible, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2020-05-06\/coronavirus-states-reopen-deaths-warning\" target=_blank>experts warn <\/a>that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2020\/05\/20\/coronavirus-update-us\/\" target=_blank>doing so too quickly<\/a> could lead to a second wave of the disease. The NIH wants digital health tools to analyze public health data to prevent any future spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt present, we have only the blunt tools of social distancing and quarantine to contain the epidemic,\u201d the RFI read. \u201cBeing able to precisely deploy containment efforts only where needed may allow larger segments of the population to return to less restricted living and reduce the risk of recurrence of devastating local outbreaks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NIH is looking for a broad range of digital technologies. According to the RFI, the NIH is seeking information on industry\u2019s contact-tracing capabilities as well as its ability to quickly integrate commercial COVID-19 diagnostic tests and other patient data in order to determine if a patient has the illness but is asymptomatic, and to identify a person\u2019s risk of contracting the disease \u2014 in addition to strong privacy protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NIH is also interested in technology that can identify movement patterns that could lead to contracting, spreading or containing the disease. Solutions also must be able to integrate new data quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effort also wants to focus on underrepresented populations and areas with lower access to health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNovel digital health solutions have the potential to improve care, understanding of health outcomes, and risk factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic,&#8221; the RFI read. &#8220;This is especially important in underserved populations, which are disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and often have limited access to healthcare services. This is also important in its potential to broaden the geographic understanding of factors related to exposure, spread, and containment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effort will be implemented through a \u201chub-and-spoke\u201d model, in which the spokes, or the digital health solutions, share <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/institutional_review_board\/hipaa_research\/de_identified_data.html\" target=_blank>de-identified data<\/a> with the NIH data hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will enable researchers, for example, to apply a risk classification algorithm developed in one spoke to individuals\u2019 health data that was collected by other spokes,\u201d the RFI read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and the National Cancer Institute are hosting a virtual
