{"id":14842,"date":"2016-05-10T18:22:04","date_gmt":"2016-05-10T18:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/05\/10\/texas-man-pleaded-guilty-for-irs-get-transcript-scam\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:41:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:41:18","slug":"texas-man-pleaded-guilty-for-irs-get-transcript-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2016\/05\/10\/texas-man-pleaded-guilty-for-irs-get-transcript-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas man pleaded guilty for IRS \u2018Get Transcript\u2019 scam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Houston man pleaded guilty on May 9 to claiming fraudulent tax refunds with information stolen from an IRS database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Denzel Roberts, 24, is charged with theft of public money for his role in a scheme to file bogus tax returns with information taken from the &#8220;Get Transcript&#8221; database, an online feature that allows a taxpayer to access copies of their tax accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRS officials discovered that the database had been breached in May 2015, with the information of more than a million taxpayers at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DOJ officials said in a press release that other scheme participants filed bogus tax returns with information stolen from the &#8220;Get Transcript&#8221; database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roberts used a fake passport to open a series of bank accounts for which the refunds were deposited. He admitted to withdrawing the fund from the account for a fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. As part of a plea deal, Roberts agreed to pay $74,341.39 in restitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sentencing is scheduled for Aug.
