{"id":14924,"date":"2018-07-02T21:10:53","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T21:10:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/02\/us-most-vulnerable-in-the-world-to-cyberattacks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:43:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:43:18","slug":"us-most-vulnerable-in-the-world-to-cyberattacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/02\/us-most-vulnerable-in-the-world-to-cyberattacks\/","title":{"rendered":"US \u2018most vulnerable in the world\u2019 to cyberattacks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States is the nation most vulnerable in the world to cyberattacks, according to a former Obama administration official, a recognition that America\u2019s digital infrastructure is uniquely susceptible to foreign penetration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. is \u201cthe best in the world on the offense,\u201d said Rob Knake, a former director for cybersecurity policy at the Obama White House, before adding that America is politically and technically the most susceptible nation in the world to digital attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are going to be less reactive to incoming cyberattacks because we have more to lose and we\u2019re in a democratic society that is going to force government to take certain responses,\u201d Knake said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/event\/cyber-conflict-evolution-warfare\" title=\"\" class=\"\">during <\/a>a June 20 event at the Council on Foreign Relations. \u201cThat\u2019s not true of China, Russia, Iran or North Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the overall tone of his comments were not surprising, Knake provided rare details into the Obama administration\u2019s cyber-deterrence policy that has recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/congress\/capitol-hill\/2018\/06\/28\/can-congress-salvage-a-broken-cyber-strategy\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">been criticized<\/a> for not being more aggressive in response to foreign actions. He walked through the White House\u2019s response to Iranian cyberattacks on American banks, which appear to have occurred from 2011 to 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knake said the first temptation was for the U.S. to strike back against the Iranians, but the White House decided to hold off for two reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, there was an ongoing secret dialogue with Iran over Tehran\u2019s nuclear capacity that might be thrown into chaos after an American digital retaliation. Second, Knake said there was a decision not to \u201clegitimize\u201d the Iranian hacking. Instead, the Obama administration decided to \u201cto put the costs on the banks, (because) they can afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Obama administration is widely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2014\/11\/countdown-to-zero-day-stuxnet\/\">reported<\/a> to have conducted a cyberattack on Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities that became known as \u201cStuxnet\u201d after it was exposed in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apparent recognition that financial institutions paid the price for U.S. foreign policy is another indicator of how complex America\u2019s digital infrastructure is. Unlike most other nations, a large percentage of America\u2019s critical infrastructure is privately owned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former Obama administration official
