Bill Nelson isn\u2019t backing down from comments that Russian operatives have penetrated some of his state\u2019s election systems ahead of this year\u2019s crucial election.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur citizens deserve a secure election system that fulfills their unalienable right to participate in their government free from interference,\u201d Way said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement comes about three months ahead of a general election in New Jersey, where a U.S. Senate seat is atop the ticket, as well as all 12 House seats. The announcement also comes as special counsel Robert Mueller investigates Russia\u2019s attempts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/cyber\/2018\/08\/10\/why-hacking-successful-or-not-can-lead-to-a-crisis-of-confidence-about-election-security\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-699297738.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why hacking &#8211; successful or not &#8211; can lead to a crisis of confidence about election security<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Department of Homeland Security is worried about data security and confidence in the voting process during the upcoming midterm elections, a top official said at the Black Hat conference.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the plans for the money, is the establishment of a position either in the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness or the Division of Military and Veterans Affairs that would be focused on cybersecurity and elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other money would go toward setting up a pilot program to let officials buy or lease voting systems that produce a paper audit trail. The department said the program would first operate in small jurisdictions with a small number of voting machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funds would also be used for roughly a half-dozen other broad categories, including setting up a program to assess physical vulnerabilities at polling places in counties, as well as the creation of a mobile app that to steer voters to election information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of State said it has not been made aware of any election-related security breaches in New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funding is aimed at new initiatives, but the department said in a statement it already conducts cybersecurity training exercises with the U.S. Homeland Security Department, among other efforts including helping county officials review voter rolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funds include about $9.7 million from the federal government, which Congress approved in March and President Donald Trump signed into law. About $500,000 comes from a state matching fund. The federal legislation set aside $380 million in grants for the states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money is distributed by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission under Help America Vote Act of 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money will finance programs through 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Jersey is poised to use
